The important thing now is to

THE WORLDS MOST WIDELY USED DEVOTIONAL GUIDE
Read John
He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot
with gravecloths . . Jesus safttfc unto them, Loose ‘
him, and let him go. ((John 11:44)
In study of the Bible, one is amazed at the unlimited spiritual
applications that pertain to our dally life. In the account of the
raising of Lazarus, for example, Jesus said of those standing by
to take away the stone from the tomb. Then when Lazarus was
raised from the dead and came forth, Jesus said again to the men,
“Loose him and let him go.” Jesus had the power to bring life
but He does not do for us what we can do for ourselves!
Many Christians are weak in the faith and bound by doubt and
past failings. Are we doing nothing to help them get free from
their bondage? We are our brothers’ keepers, and we can do our
part to loose them from their bondage and to stand by them in
their time of trouble by our sympathy, prayers and deeds on their
behalf.
PRATER
Our Father, who desirest the freedom of all mankind
to serve Thee, grant us the insifht to see the needy
souls around that are hardened and fettered. May our
vision of the Savior be clear and our witness to others
given in love. We ask in the name of our Master, who
teaches all His followers to pray, “Our Father who
art in heaven . . . Amen.

Very frequently in the months
ahead conservatives are going to
hear the line that conservatism
is a dead force in American poli
tics. The argument of the lib
eral Is that the relatively small
number of votes that went to
Barry Goldwater, the Republi
can presidential nominee, makes
plain that never again will a
presidential candidate be an all-
out conservative.
This is an utterly fallacious ar
gument and should be countered
immediately. In the first place,
while his electoral vote total was

LAWSON
noffiigh, 39 per cent of the popu
lar vote went to Barry Goldwa
ter. In the climate of abuse
heaped on Senator Goldwater, it
is certainly clear that anyone
who voted for the Arizonian was
a down-the-Line, convinced con
servative.
To have almost two-fifths of
the Americans solidly persuaded
of the full range of the rightness
of the conservative philosophy Is
a remarkable achievement, es
pecially In view of the years and
years of Dealer government and
liberal propagandizing in the
United States.
For a conservative candidate
to win the next presidential elec
tion, it would only be necessary
for him to win an additional 13
per cent support from the elec
torate. That is a Usk that should
be accomplished, providing there
is real hard work In the next
four years. In the meantime,
there are more than 38 million
people who surely will not wa
ver in their conservative convic
tions. Such a foundation of good
government Is encouraging ra
ther than dismaying.
In addition, this power base
for conservatism is not, as some
pundits are saying, confined to
one section of the country. More
than 3.9 million Californians, for
example, gave their votes to Sen
ator Goldwater.
It is very likely that the Cold-
water cause would have tri
umphed had It not been for a Big
Lie campaign unprecedented in
American politics. A certain
amount of name-calling Is an un
pleasant feature of all presiden
tial contests. But this year’s
contest hit a new low In ugliness,
truth distortion and vindictive
ness For many months before
Mr. Goldwater won the Repub
lican presidential nomination, he
was a target of filthy charges.
He was presented as a fascist, a
Hitler type, a man who hated old
people and sick people, a man
who would let hungry people
starve. The truth Is that Sena
tor Goldwater was a man with
out a moral blemish, a contri
butor to the work of his church,
a good employer when he was in
private business, and a man of
conscience and responsibility in
his home community as well as
in his life of public service.
If ever there was a man in
politics against whom false wit
ness was given it is Barry M.
Goldwater. He was the victim
of a conspiracy of lying, and mil
lions of Americans were duped
by the conspirators. Fooled and
tricked by the smears directed
at Senator Goldwater, many nor
mally conservative-voting citi
zens were bewildered and de
clined to vote for him. The coun
try even witnessed the strange
and illogical spectacle of Sen
ator Hubert Humphrey, former
chairman of the radical Ameri
cans for Democratic Action, say
ing that he was more of a con
servative than that “radical”
Barry Goldwater. Josef Goeb-
bels, Hitler’s propaganda chief,
who originated the Big Lie.
Technique — the Incessant rep
etition of a blatant untruth—must
have smiled from whatever hell
he occupies.
Make no mistake; The Ameri
can people did not vote against
conservatism in the IBM presi
dential election; they were simp
ly led astray into believing that
a genuine choice for coneerva-
tism was not before them.
Informed citizens know who
perpetrated the Big Lie in the
election. The Big Lie was chiefly
the work of television commen
tators who, masquerading as Im
partial analysts of political news,
actually used their time on tele
vision to knock conservatism *
every opportunity. Again and
