Due to the vision and foresight
of its citizens, what might have
been Just a rural village is to
day the thriving trade center of
Hartsville. The civic conscious
ness of this community is re
flected in the awards it has re
ceived on three occasions as the
"cleanest city in the nation” in
its population class.
The Hartsville area has been
steadily growing in recent years,
and within th» Hty limits pr»«-
ently there are 8,700 people.
Greater Hartsville, taking in a
one-and-a-half mile radius of the
city, now has a population of 16,-
000.
k Transportation facilities are
excellent, with frequent truck,
rail and bus service. Hartsville
is on U. S. Highway 15, "the
shortest route North and South,”
and is 1 miles southeast of fa
mous U. S. Highway 1. Regular
airline service is available at
Florence, Just 91 miles away.
Local residents are Justly
proud of the new federally li
censed Hartsville airport, which
has 3,500 feet of lighted runway,
and offers charter and air taxi
services. The airport is five
miles northeast of the city.
It was not until after the Civil
War that the Hartsville area be
gan to develop. From 1800 to
1010, the town experienced un
usually fast growth. Prior to that
time, the area was sparsely set
tled, mostly by plantation owners
^ and farmers.
The town was incorporated in
1801, taking its name from one
oi the early settlers, Thomas
Hart. Many of the commercial
establishments and later busi
ness development of the city
could be attributed to an early
pioneer, Major James Coker, and
his sons. They foresaw a bright
future for Hartsville, and did
their best to insure its prosper
ity. It was one of the few small
towns in the South to have elec
tric lights prior to 1800.
Education is one of the pri
mary considerations of Harts
ville residents, and this is high
lighted by the presence of Coker
College, a four-year liberal arts
college for women. It is a small
independent college, named for
the Coker family, with an enroll
ment of about 400 students. The
number of students is purposely
limited to provide personalized
instruction and a -‘family” at
mosphere. Coker now admits
men day students.
* In addition to Coker College,
other nearby educational facilit-
ties include a branch of the Uni
versity of South Carolina at Flor
ence, and a brand new Techni
cal Education Center, located on
U. S. Highway 52, about 10 miles
from Hartsville. This new center
wOl serve both Darlington and
Florence Counties.
There is no lack of recrea
tional activity in Hartsville. For
thpfo who enjoy the water, there
is Prestwood Lake, a 500-acre
water playground within the city
itself, as well as beautiful Lake
Robinson, a M00 acre skiing,
hunting and fishing paradise
about six miles away.
The Hartsville Golf Club is a
nine-hole course, with nine more
id'the planning stage. Family
groups take advantage of Lawtoa
Park, a public facility located
overlooking Prestwood Lake.
Beach resorts as well as excel
lent inland fishing spots are
within easy driving distance of
Hartsville. Of course, the famous
Darlington Raceway, boms of
the "Southern 500,” is Just fif
teen minutes away.
