THE CLINTON CHRONICLE
mville and Spar-\
U. S. Highway
crossroad#”
Greer, S. C. Sit-
at an* elevation of 1,037
the foothills of the Blue
* the town has an ideal
and industrial location,
five miles north of Inher
es, and 13 miles from the
change of Interstates 26 and
w, Greer also has excellent air
rail service. Not far away
is the new $10 million jet-age
Greenville-Spartanburg Airport.
The thriving little city if on the
main line of the Southern Rail
way, running between Washing
ton, D. C., and New Orleans,
La.
Greer is well known joutside as
well as within the state for its
annual South Carolina Peach
Festival in June of each year.
This colorful event features golf
tournaments, parades, square
dancing and a beauty pageant.
The young lady who is selected
Peach Festival Queen spends the
next year traveling widely to
promote Greer and its famous
South Carolina Peaches.
This modern community has
more than quadrupled its popu
lation since 1940, and today there
are better than 20,000 people
within a three-mile radius. If
you follow history back two cen
turies, you’ll find that what is
now the Greer area was a part
of the “Domain of the Chero
kee s.” After the American Revo
lution, it became a part of the
State of South Carolina.
Presently it is the second larg
est city in Greenville County,
Named for Manning Greer, who
purchased the original tract of
land in 1866, it is the only town
in the nation by that name. W. T.
Shumate bought this land in I
1868, because he anticipated that
the Southern Railway would pass
through the area. Shumate was
right, and the town was granted
a charter in 1873.
Greer is on the threshold of
new industrial growth, with its
ideal location in the heartland of
the New South. The entire
Greenville - Spartanburg County
area is growing by leaps and
bounds, and Greer intends to be
a part of this expansion. In addi
tion to its major textile industry,
the town is also the site for man
ufacturers of concrete products,
fertilizers, feeds, canned goods
and wood products.
There aren’t any recreation
problems, and Greer has modern
facilities for its young people,
including skating rink, bowling
lanes and ball parks. Local resi
dents are rightfully proud of
their American Legion Junior
baseball team. Young and old
alike take advantage of swim
ming and golfing at the Greer
golf and country club. Fishing,
swiming and other water sports
are readily available in the near
by Blue Ridge mountains Camp
ing and picnic sites are within
easy reach of Greer, as well as
some of the finest sightseeing in
the South.
Greer retains the warmth and
hospitality of a small southern
town, while it progresses into an
up and coming industrial city.
