from Charleston to Knoxville,
Twin. Although the railroad it
self was completed as far as the
town of Walhalla, the coming of
the War Between the States
doomed the project.
It was at Isaqueen Falls that
a legendary Creek Indian maid
en, who was supposedly fleeing
to join her white lover, managed
to escape from her Creek pur
suers by hiding on a ledge be
hind the falls. It is also interest
ing to note that the town of Wal
halla was so named by German
settlers after the famous Val
halla, legendary resting place of
the Vikings.
The Long Can Masacre took
place on February 1, 1700 in
what is now McCormick County,
not far from the town of Troy,
S. C. A Cherokee war party
overtook a group of settlers flee
ing to Augusta. While the ter
rible battle raged, Mrs. Wiliam
Calhoun, wife of one of the set
tlers leaders, miraculously man
aged to escape into the forest,
where she gave birth to a son.
On South Carolina secondary
road 18, southwest of Union S.
C., within the Forest, you’ll find
the old country estate of South
Carolina’s Secession Governor
William H. Gist. Below the home
is a beautiful grove of hickory
and oak trees. The Gist home,
built in 1838, was named Rose
Hill, supposedly after the Gov
ernor’s large row garden. It was
from here that Gist dispatched
his cousin, “States Rights” Gist,
to call on several southern gov
ernors to join the Secession
movement. The home and
grounds became a state park in
I960.
There are many other fascinat
ing points of interest within the
Forest or nearby that you won’t
want to miss. You can always
obtain further Information about
the Sumter National Forest, Its
camp grounds and other facili
ties by contacting the division of
U. S. Forest Rangers. The rang
er stations for the Sumter Forest
are located at Edgefield, Green
wood, Newberry, Union and Wal
halla.
