The first
of the Duncan
Creek Watershed Project was
completed last week. The final
inspection of the 54,000 cubic
yard structureAm the -Whitten
Village farm was held last
Thursday. J. la Aall, State Con
servation Engineer of Soil Con
servation Service, led the inspec
tion team composed of E. M.
Powell, project engineer; Robert
Wigington, inspector; J. B. O’
Dell, local work unit conserva
tionist; C. D. Wladrep, chairman
of Duncan Creek Watershed di
rectors, and J. Ben Hunter and
Victor Stroup, contractors for the
project After a few minor cor
rections were made the construc
tion part of the dam was declar
ed completed.
The vegetative treatment for
the dam, spillway and borrow
ana will get underway next
week. Bermuda grass will be
planted on the dam and spillway
and sericea lespedeza on the bor
row areas. Posey W. Copeland
of Clinton was awarded the con
tract for the vegetative work.
FARM POND MANAGEMENT
A minnow seine used in June,
July, or August, will settle most
of your arguments about fish in
farm ponds with no more than a
few minutes effort.
When you request fish to stock
a pond, even a new one, a min
now seine pulled through the wa
ter’s edge will reveal the kinds
of fish present. If there are any
little bluegills or other sunfish in
the seine — then there will be
more than 1,000 or 1,500 per care
which otherwise would be sought
for stocking the pond. Many
thousand of hatchery fish are
wasted annually by being placed
in ponds already adequately
stocked with either the right or
wrong find of fish.
How do fish find their way into
ponds? Most commonly they are
there because people finding It
hard to be patient until the fall
deliveries of fish “Just put in a
few but didn’t know they would
spawn so soon.” Fish also get
into ponds by natural means:

Funeral services were con
ducted Monday at 5:00 p. m. at
Lucas Avenue Baptist Church by
Rev. Alvin Boone and Rev. Ray
Grain*. Burial was in Forest
Lawn cemetery.

If you don't believe the little
bluegills you placed in a pond
last winter have spawned this
summer, Just use the minnow
seine.
If you want to be sure your
new bass have spawned so you
can begin catching those of use-
able size, look with the minnow
seine. Even though you catch
no more than one or two bass of
finger length you can be sure
there are more than enough
throughout the pond to replace
the “big ones’’ you can catch.
If in May, June, or July, you
find no fingerling bass, there is
something wrong and you would
do well to obtain 100 bass per
acre for fertilized ponds. Once
in balance, the bass will continue
to regulate their own number and
that of the bluegill, provided you
keep out water weeds.

and temptations which face us
in life. The great moment in the
book is when Pilgrim, carrying
on his back a huge bundle of
worries and sins, comes to the
Cross, where his burden is cut
from him and rolls away. This
is presented in an old hymn
which many of us know, “Alas,
And Did My Saviour Bleed.” the
chorus of which reads, “At the
Cross, at hte Cross, where I first
saw the light and the burden
of my heart rolled away, It was
there by faith I received toy
sight, And now I am happy all
the day!”
Some of you who read this col
umn have in times past exper-
rienced the burden of your heart
rolling away at the Cross, when
by faith in Him who died on the
cross for your sins, you received
your sight.
Many have lost the faith and
are in darkness again. Others
never had the experience. How
did you lose it? You allowed the
light of faith to go out. I’ve just
had a vivid illustration of this.

in one of the candles had burned

If I had neglected this, eventual

darkness.
The candle of our faith so of
ten goes out as a result of neg
lect, and ere long we find our
selves walking and living in
darkness.
The light of faith must be
kept burning brightly if we com
plete our pilgrimage to the Ce-
lestian City, to the Shrine of
God.
Are your burdens heavy? If
the light of faith dim in your
life? Don’t let your candles burn
out. If you do, darkness will de
scend, worries will burden you,
and your pilgrimage will be slow
ed down an even come to a halt.
There is another hymn in this
old book which some of you may
recall: '‘The whole world was
lost in the darkness of sin, The
light of the world is Jesus . .
These old hymns of faith bring
light for our pilgrimage to the
Shrine of God.

son, 70. died at 1:30 p. m., Fri
day at her home, Rt. 2, Enoree,
after two weeks of illness
Bom and reared at Enoree,
daughter of the late S. Q. and
Ida H. Davis Watson, she was
eraduated from the South Caro
lina State Hospital School of
Nursing in Columbia in 1911.
She was employed at Whitten
Village in Clinton 25 years be
fore her retirement two years
ago. She was a member of Yar
borough’s Chapel Methodist
Church.
Surviving are two brothers,
Ralph M. Watson of Columbia,
and A. (Sam) Watson of Enoree.
Funeral services were con
ducted Sunday at 3:00 p. m. at
the Yarborough’s Chapel church
by Rev. H. Alvin Spradley.
Burial was in the church ceme
tery.
Mrs. Amos Burch
Laurens—Mrs. Fannie Simons
Burch, 71, of Rt. 1, Laurens, died
at 2:00 p. m., Saturday, at the
home of her daughter, Mrs Roy
Cox, after six months of illness.
A native and lifelong resident
of Laurens County, she was t
daughter of the late Thomas A.
and Nancy Jones Simmons. She
was a member of Lucas Avenue
