Mrs. John Lewis Seabrook, 206 Live Oak Drive, Mount
Pleasant, announces the engagement of her daughter, Sarah
Ann, to William Adair Horne, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Snead Horne of this city.
Miss Seabrook is a member of the graduating class at the
General William Moultrie High School, Mount Pleasant. Bar
father is deceased.
Mr. Horne is a senior at The Citadel, Charleston, and upon

Choir Feted By
Rev., Mrs. Mitchell
Members of First Baptist
Church choir, Joanna, were en
tertained at dinner on Saturday
evening, April 29, in the church
recreation room by Rev. and
Mrs. James B. Mitchell.
Guests of honor were Miss Eu
genia Byars, Winthrop College,
who will be married to Gerald
Johnson of Rock Hill on June 5;
Miss Willa Rae McGowan who
will be married to Johnny Lewis,
Columbia, on June 7; and Mr.
and Mrs. Mack Wayne Camp
bell of Clinton and Union who
were married April 10.
Guests were received by Mr.
and Mrs. Nathan Brazel and
were introduced to the receiving
line by Rev. James Mitchell.
Games were directed by Mis
ses Karen Surratt, Donna Bran
non, and Candy Dunlap.

dining room by Mr. and Mrs.

All Saints Women
In Monthly Meet
Mrs. John Rivers gave a pro
gram on the Historical Psalms
at the monthly meeting of the
Women of All Saints Episcopal
Church Monday afternoon at
the Parish House. Mrs. J. B.
Hart led the opening devotion
al and prayer.
During the business meeting
Mrs. A. B. Stump, president,
presided. Plans were made for
a congregational covered dish
supper and annual business
meeting to take place May 13
at the Parish House.
Craven and Ginger Byars and
Mrs. Ray Bragg assisted in serv
ing. A buffet dinner was served
to the thirty-six guests.
Pink and white snapdragons,
fern, and candles adorned the
tables.
Guest books were given to
each couple. Guests were regis
tered by Miss Barbara Johnson
of Charlotte, N. C.

Junior-Senior
Program Held
At Clinton High
The Junior class of Clinton
High School presented the “Cin
derella Ball” Friday night in the
high school gymnasium in honor
of the senior class.
Guests included the faculty, ad
ministrators, and trustees of
Clinton High Schodl.

which boys portrayed Cinderella,

Shower Given For'
Winthrop Bride-Elect
Miss Eugenia Byars, June
bride-elect, was entertained Fri
day evening at Joanna Clubhouse
with a miscellaneous shower by
Mrs. William P. Byars, Mrs. Ru
fus L. Francis, Mrs. Lester Hair,
Mrs. G. Edward Lehman and
Mrs. Louis Murphy.
As guests arrived, each regis
tered in the Bride’s Book, which
was presented to Miss Byars by
the hostesses and presided over
by Mrs. Lester Hair. Upon her
arrival, the honoree was present
ed an orchid corsage and was es
corted to the chair of honor.
Several bridal games were di
rected by Mrs. R. L. Francis,
and a telegram was delivered to
Miss Byars, which directed her
to a cart laden with useful gifts.
Following the opening of the
gifts, the guests were* invited
into the dining room for refresh
ments. The table was decorated
with green and white motif.
Lovely arrangements of Iris
were used at vantage points
throughout the dining room.
Cake squares, nuts and mints
were served by Mrs. William P.
Byars and Mrs. G. Edward Leh
man and Mrs. Louis Murphy
served punch.
Out of town guests included

Mrs. James Boyd Speake of 164 West Walnut Street an
nounces the engagement of her daughter, Rebecca Louise, to
James Claude Wood, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James Claude
Wood of Spartanburg.
Miss Speake will receive a B. A. degree from Columbia
College in June. Mr. Wood received his B. S. and M. 8. de
grees from Clem son University and is now doing further grad
uate work in physics at the University of Virginia, Charlottes
ville.
The wedding will take place August 8 in Broad Street
Methodist Church.
Cotillion Club
Gives Spring Dance
“Spring In Paris” was the
theme for the Clinton Cotillion
Club Spring Dance held Saturday
evening at the Mary Musgrove
Hotel.
Some fifty couples were pres
ent for the gala event, and en
joyed dancing to the music of
the Clyde Wise Combo of Green
wood.
UDC To Meet At
Thomwell Thursday
The Stephen D. Lee Chapter of
the U. D. C. will meet today
(Thursday) at the:lake house at
Thornwell Orphanage.
A picnic lunch is planned at

Gives WSCS Program
The W. S. C. S. of Broad St.
Methodist Church met Monday
afternoon with the president,
Mrs. James Walker, presiding.
Announcements were made as
following: the three afternoon
circles has been re-drawn and a
list of the new circles have been
posted in the vestibule of the
church.
“The Pledge Service” was the
title of the program given by
Mrs. Dan Yarborough.
Circles to met Monday, May 4,
at 3:30 p. m. are as follows: “The
Barden Circle” at the home of
Mrs. Nene Workman; “The Hat
ton” to meet at the church; and
"The Johnson”, will meet at the
home of Miss Essie Davidson.
Garden Club Council
Plans Year's Work
The Ciinton Council of Garden
Clubs met Tuesday at the home
of Mrs. Don Creighton in Merrie
Oaks.
The meeting was called for
the purpose of planning the years
program of work. Members pre
sent included officers of the
council and club representatives.
Piano Student In
Recital Saturday
The piano students of Mrs.
Tom Taylor will give their re
cital, Saturday evening at 8
o’clock at the First Presbyterian
Church.
Any interested member is in
vited to attend.
Hampton Avenue
School Program
Slated For Tuesday
The fourth, fifth, and sixth
grades of Hampton Avenue
School will present their annual
spring program on Tuesday,
May 12, at 7:30 p. m., being a
culmination of work done in the
music classes of the school.
The title of the program is “An
Evening With the Old Masters,”
and will consist mainly of ex
cerpts from famous composi
tions in scenes worked out in
regular music periods.
A flutephone (song flute) chor
us will initiate the program, fol
lowed by a dramatization of the
lives of Haydn and Mozart.
Fifth graders will put on a
creative phantasy, using a selec
tion from the Peer Gynt Suite,
In the Hall of the Mountain
King ’ with appropriate costumes
and lighting effects.
Fourth graders will give an
excerpt from the opera Hansel
and Gretel, (Humperdinck).
Sixth graders will do Arabian
music and parts of Strauss waltz
es.
Throughout the program there
will be dances, colorful costumes,
and stage scenery.
The director of the program
will be Mrs. Grace Connor,
music teacher in the three el
ementary schools of Clinton.

Miss Shirley Ann Timmons,
rising sophomore at Columbia
College, has been named elec
tion chairman for the spho-
more class at the college for
the coming year. She is the
daughter of Mrs. Shirley Tim
mons and the late Mr. Tim
mons.

Area Iris Gardens
Blooming In May
Prospects this season for a
finq show of iris blooms in the
Newberry-Saluda area are very
good, according to Hal Kohn, of
Newberry, a past president of
the South Carolina Iris Society.
Mr. Kohn says that iris in this
vicinity begins to bloom freely
about May 1, with a heavy bloom
continuing for a good part of the
month.
On a trip in this section there
are four gardens to be visited.
In Saluda are those of Mrs. W. C.
Branch and Mrs. Ben Able; in
Silverstreet, “Nick’s” Iris Gar
den; and on 76 Bypass, New
berry, the Kohn garden.
All four gardens welcome visit
