to Muskogee due to the illness
of their granddaughter, who

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Plans are being made for the
annual Vacation Bible School
to be held at Calvary Baptist
Church during the week of
June 8-12. Mrs. Vernon Tram
mell has been named principal
of the schpol.
CLASS MEETS
The Fidelis Sunday school
class of Calvary Baptsit Church
will hold the regular meeting
at the home of Mrs. Charles
Kinard on Hickory Street on
Tuesday evening. All members
are urged to come. A covered
dish supper will be served.
BIRTHDAY PARTY GIVEN
On Friday afternoon Cindy
Smith was entertained on her
5th birthday by her mother,
Mrs. Ed Smith. During the af
ternoon games were pay led,
with Debbie Patterson and
Tammy Franklin winning the
prizes. After Cindy had open
ed the many nice gifts the
guests enjoyed refreshments of
the birthday cake, ice cream
and birthday punch. Each
guest received favors of birth
day horns, suckers and bal
loons. Mrs. J .W. Campbell as-

guests.

Conservation
Notes

Work Unit Conservationist
W. R. Cook and Son of Gray
Court constructed seven plan
ned waterways on their Geor
gia Road far mthis week. The
Cooks used the district’s motor
grader to do this earth-moving
along with land smothing as
recommended by the local Soil
Conservation Service, prior to
the construction of terraces on
these fields.

Everette Bobo terraced about
20 acres on his farm three
miles east of. Gray Court. He
also excavated a waterway in
this field and planted it to
Brown Top Millet and Lespe-
deza Sericea. He used the
Hunter Brothers motor grader
for doing this work.

The following farmers were
assisted by the Laurens Soil
Conservation District last week
in planting Coastal Bermuda
grass: H. M. Miles, Shiloh; W.
V. Lollis, Hickory Tavern;
Paul O’Dell, Ekom; Mrs. Da
vid Copeland, Renno; S. J.
Rimer, Yarborough’s Mill Rd.;
and Garth Willis, Barksdale.
In addition to being one of
our best summer pasture grass-
es. Coastal Bermuda is also an
excellent perennial hay crop
that is high in yield and nutri
tive value. Coastal Bermuda is
also one of our best erosion
control plants. It ties down the
soil and soaks up the rainfall.
It will fit well into any cattle
farmer’s grazing program.

The Laurens County Soil and
Water Conservation Needs In
ventory Report, 1958-1975, is
now available. Copies of the
brochure can be obtained at
the offices of the Soil Conser
vation Service, County Agent,
ASCS land the Farmers Home
Administration. All agricultural
agencies cooperated* in this un
dertaking. The publication,
compliments of - The Palmetto
Bank, contains much useful in
formation about our county and
its conservation needs. Includ
ed in the inventory are basic
facts concerning cropland,
grassland, woodland and other
land. Also included are acre
ages devoted to recreation, wa
tersheds and non-agricultural
uses along with a variety of
local pictures.
