Death always stuns a house
hold. It is a tremendous shock.
Things which were so important
a few days ago suddenly shrivef
into insignificance. Some pass
through this experience and
j emerge with a new faith, while
! some never recover.
Jerusalem was stunned by Cal
vary. Frightened people hurried
home. The Roman centurion in
charge of the execution was
heard to exclaim, “Certainly this
was a righteous man; truly this
man was the Son of God.” Ju
das went out and hanged himself.
Those who had hurled insults at
the dying Christ on the Cross,
now, like frightened dogs scur
ried whimpering off into silence.
Those who had brought about the
death of Jesus rushed into con
sultation as to how they could
protect themselves.
Saturday was the day of the si
lence of death. But, as the day
wore on and nothing seemed to
happen, Jerusalem settled back
and prepared to take up the old
routine again on the morrow.
A few devoted friends of Jesus
took Him down from the Cross,
and tenderly laid Him in the
borrowed tomb of Joseph of Ari-
mathea.
They did not forget Him, but
they were not prepared for the
wondrous events of the next day.
To the great majority of the peo
ple it was an idle tale. They*
went right on back to their jobs.
Jesus said it will be the same
way at the end of the age when
He returns again. How many of
us live on the surface of life un
til some soul stirring experience
ploughs through our hearts.
Easter this year will mean
more to som e of us than it will
for others. Those in whose
homos there is a vacant chair
and whose thoughts go out to
some new grave, will be reach
ing out for the hope and strength
of the' _ Easter message. They
will be thinking more about the
spiritual garments which they
will wear in the great Easter
parade yet to come, of which
Easter morning is an annual re
minder.
Easter calls the whole realm
of nature to newness of life. The
garments of nature wither and
pass away; the garments of man
wax old and become tattered
with the years. But the gar
ments of the soul are imperish
able. Where and how we wear
the hereafter will be determined
by where and how we make
them here. Suffering precedes
