The guiding philosophy of
Rock Hill might be expressed
In a motto on the wan of the
Chamber ofjCommerce office,
which says A Nothing happens
until sometmfy does some
thing." These citizens are not
waiting for someone else to do
it—they are active and posi
tive in building a better com
munity.
Rock Hill is a growing indus
trial city of 30,000 people with
nn ideal "cross roads” loca
tion. Situated 70 miles north of
the state capital at Columbia,
and some 20 miles south of
Charlotte, N. G., it is the hub
of South Carolina highways 5,
72, and 322, and U. S. High
way 21.
An invitation is awaiting you
to visit this city on April 16, 17
and 18 for the "Come-See-Me”
celebration, a week-end of gala
hospitality, fun and color. Be
sides industrial plant visits and
tours of beautiful residential
areas and gardens, there is the
highlight on Friday and Satur-
day nights of "Hometown Fol
lies," a fabulous show featur
ing an array of fine talent.
1 The "Follies” are sponsored
by the ladies of the Junior Wel
fare League, with participation
by local citizens ,including
their husbands and neighbors.
In the past, show business per
sonalities had been invited
from outside to netertain for
"Come-See-Me,” but it was
rightfully decided that the
show should represent Rock
Hill and some of its own tal
ented citizens. This year, sev
eral quartets representing the
local chapter of the Society for
Preservation of Barber Shop
Quartet Singing in America
will add lustre to the occasion.
"Come-See-Me” week-end co
incides with the opening of
Glencaira Gardens. This mu
nicipally-owned park is a mag
nificently landscaped five
acres in the heart of the city.
Each April, Glnecaim is at its
peak, with dogwood, camellias,
wisteria and gorgeous pink,
white and rde azaleas in full
bloom.
The late Dr. David Bigger,
Rock Hill physician, started
the now famous gardens as a
hobby in 1928, and named it
after his family’s ancestral
home in Scotlnad. After Dr.
Bigger’s death in 1958, his wife
deeded the garden to the city.
Glencaim has been expanded
and further developed under
the guidance of landscape ar
chitect Robert E. Marvin, with
another acre having been add
ed as late as 1962. Evnetual
plans call for it to be twice its
present size.
"Come - See - Me” week fes
tivities create a pride in com
munity which just naturally re
sults in a mo re attractive city,
ft’s a spring festival of fun,
and visitors fro mthroughout
the state and surrounidng area
are urged to drop in. Friends
who haven’t seen each other in
months or years take this op
portunity to renew acquaintr
ances.
An estimated 4,000 visitors
have come in some years during
"Come-See-Me” activity. As an
indication of citizen reaction,
city authorities say that trash
coUection services are often
doubled during a three-week
period before “Com-See-Me,”
and some 80 per cent of the
homes and yards were made
attractive for the vent. It’s this
pride and enterprise that keeps
Rock HU la clean and colorful
community all year long. It is
believed that the idea for
"com-See-Me” is original with
Rock HiU, and it has met with
tremendous success.
You had better call your
friends in Rock Hill now, or
make reservations to be on
hand for “Come-See-Me,” a >
fabulous week-end of enjoy-
ment. .Drop a line to Vernon
