Sooner or later in Ufe every
man meets heartbreak and fail
ure. He is not worth much until
he has come to this point. The
late Bishop Edward Mouson of
the Methodist Church once told
me that no man will amount to
anyting in the ministry until he
has had his heart broken at least
once. Then he added, “That ap
plies to any man or foman.”
Only trial, adversity, and fail
ure can break open the selfish
heart so that it may take in the
love and power of God.
The New Testament gives two
interesting stories of failures. One
was Simon Peter who denied his
Lord at the time of His trial. The
other was John Mark who, un
willing to face the hazards of a
missionary journey with Patil,
quit and walked out. Both of
these men failed in a critical
hour. But both redeemed their
failure and became nobel and
useful servants of God. Their
failure did not cause them to run
away. They got up where they

According to man’s standard,
Jesus Himself failed again and
again—not for lack of wisdom,
moral strength, or courage, but
because of the ^stubborn unwil
lingness of men who would not
listen, much less give heed to His
words. 1
Many ministers of the gospel
and other courageous leaders are
failing today because of the stub
bor unwillingness of men to heed
; their pleadings.
■ From time to time all of us fail.
We can either fail miserably or
j gaTantly. The miserable failure
I slinks away. He does not have th e
courage to get up and make
amends where he fell down. We
see thesj? kind of failures all
j about us. They think they are
i beaten. They have lost hope.
They moan their lot, wallow in
self-pity, and refuse to try again.
No man is beaten until he gives
up the struggle. All of us get dis
couraged at times, but we dont’
'have to be that way. We become
discouraged with a temper which
f ares up and hurts other people.
We may drift Into a bad habit of
fear or tension. We may fail to
overcome irritability, manage
money, or get along with other
people.
But if we keep patiently and
persistently at it, we will win.
If tf£ going gets too hard, read
what the writer or the Hebrews
says in the 12th chapter, “Con-
sid him that endureth such con
tradiction of sinners against him
se’f, lest ye be wearied and faint
in your minds. Ye have not yet
resisted unto blood.* 4 '—
Many men regarded by worldly
standards as failures were great
victors. It was said of Robert E.
Lee that he was great even in de
feat. By the standards of the
world, Jesus fas a failure. He
owned no property, had no mon
ey, held no office, had no home,
and died as an outcast. But He
lived the most triumphant life
ever lived on earth.
The only fatal thing about fail
ure is not to try again. If you
fall down, get up, and get up
where you fell down.
