urday night at a local hospital
after several years of declining
health and three weeks of ill
ness.
H was a native of Laurens
/ County where he had spent his
entire life. He had lived in Clin
ton 45 years. He was a son of

Thomas M. Holsomback, 58,
of Rt. 1, died Friday night at
a Columbia hospital after sev
eral months of declining health.
A native of Georgia, he had
tived near Clinton 16 years. He
was a veteran of World War
II.
His wife. Mrs. Lula Cothran
Holsomback, died 2o years ago.
Surviving are two. sons,
Ninety Six and the late W. Sims

tery near Gray Court.
Nephews were pallbearers.

year of declining health and one
week of illness.
A native of Laurens County,
daughter of the late Irby D. and
Pemima Nelson, she was a mem
ber of Mount Pleasant Baptist
Church.
Surviving is one sister, Miss
Vashti Nelson of Laurens.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at Kennedy Mortuary at 3
p. m. Tuesday by Rev. John R.
Turner and Rev. Grange S. Coth
ran. Burial was in the Mount
Pleasant Baptist Church Ceme
tery.
Mrs. Cannon
Mrs. Carrie M. Cannon, 86,
wife of Walter Cannon, died Fri
day at 6:40 p. m. at the home
of a son, Carl Cannon, Rt. 4,
Spartanburg, after several years
of declining health.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Fannie Taylor of Clinton,
and a brother, Boyce Martin,
also of Clinton.
Services and interment were
conducted Sunday at Sulphur
Springs Baptist Church, Spartan
burg County.

Willie Winson, Jr., 27-year-old
Negro charged with murder in
the pistol slaying of Timothy B.
Simpson, Negro, pleaded guilty
to a lesser charge of man slaugh
ter and was sentenced to three
years imprisonment as General
Sessions Court ended last Thurs
day in Laurens.
The shooting occurred April 13,
in front of Hill’s Cafe on En
terprise Street in Clinton.
Judge G. Badger Baker of
Florence presided over the sche
duled one-week term which be
gan on Monday.
In three jury trials, one de
fendant was acquitted and two
others were found guilty.
Henry Marion Crowe of Rt. 1,
Laurens, was acquitted by the
jury which heard trial of his
case on non-support charges.
Melvin Weathers, lined and
convicted of non-support, was
sentenced to one year or a $1,500
fine, ssupended on payment of
$12 a week and three years pro
bation.
In the other jury trial, George
Drummond and Ed Fuller, Neg
roes of Woorduff, were found
guilty by the jury of violation of

last Thursday evening to the Kiwanis Club on

dict in the case of Williar Earl
Buff, Jr., charged with non
support, and in the absence of
the defendant, Judge Baker hand
ed down a sealed sentence.
Solicitor W. T. Jones, told the
court that of the 73 cases on the
docket Monday, all but 11 had
been disposed of The cases will
be carried over to the next court
term in February, he said.
In dismissing the petit jurors,
Judge Baker told them it was
their continued presence in the
courtroom that made it possible
to get the amount of work done
that was accomplished. Judge
Baker commended Solicitor
Jonai* saying that he was a
“credit to the office he holds.”
As a circuit judge, he said, he
had been over the state in every
county more than once and“there
is no more effective or capable
solicitor in this state. He (Jones)
has no peer.”
Guilty pleas entered and sen
tences imposed during the term

payment of $20 a week, two years
probation.
