C, Thnrsdajr, Novemlxr Larger Share Of Taxes Requested For Municipalities “The only solution to the finan cial problem of municipalities is for them to demand an equal share of revenue from beer, wine and alcohol taares,” city official^ from 17 counties were told here last Wednesday. The speaker was State Sen. Marshall Parker of Oconee County, who addressed a region al meeting of the South Carolina Municipal Association. “Shack led with a limited source of rev enue . .. you must have help and have it soon,” he said. Parker promised the munici pal leaders his support in the battle for more beer, wine and liquor revenue during the new session of the S. C. General As sembly. He said an increased share of the revenue would take nothing from the state or counties be cause of the sharp rise in alcohol tax revenue in the last few years. Earlier in the day, the group herd Chief J. P. Strom of the State Law Enforcement Division also support additional alcohol tax revenue to municipalities as a means of hiring and superior law enforcement offi cers. Association president S. Clyde Fair of Orangeburg said the as sociation is asking for an in crease in the alcohol tax rebate to municipalities from IS to 25 per cent and an increase in the beer and wine rebate from 8 to 10 per cent. Fair said ,‘Tt is unfair for us to have some 80 percent of the enforcement problem resulting from the excess use of alcohol and to receive less than 10 per cent of the money collected from its sale.” He stressed the importance of each individual municipality sup porting the association’s request for the increase in revenue. Also speaking at the day4onf meeting was J. Arch A vary, vice president of the Trust Com pany of Georgia, who discussed urban renewal. Avary is chair man of the uttiaen's advisory Committee for Urban Renewal in Atlanta. “Urban renewal may he a so cial experiment; nevertheless, it can be made a business propo sition if it is administered and handled on a coimnon-sense basis,” Avary said. He said the program has been good for Atlanta and can be good anywhere, provided it follows a 6-4 well planned outline. , Chief Strom and Daniel R. Mc Leod, S. C. attorney general, re viewed recent law enforcement problems in the state for tbs 900 officials attending the meeting at Mary Musgrove Hotel. Mayor J. J.
