Tinsley of the Trinity Ridge community, purchased the top pen of chickens in the re cent county sale for $2.30 each. These chickens were grown by Carol Ann Jones of Owings. Fourteen 4-H club members took part in the poultry project. County Farmers Get $27,918.64 Refunds From State Gas Tax Laurens County fanners re ceived $27,918.64 in state gasoline tax refunds last year, according to T. J. Copeland, president of Laurens County Farm Bureau. The county Farm Bureau president noted that this amount represented Laurens County farmers’ share of the $1,422,018.51 total refunded in South Carolina during the fiscal year ended June 80. The total state refund was less than 1962 when $1,439,- 687.60 was refunded to state farm ers. The refunds represent 6c per gallon for on-the-farm used gas oline, Copeland stated. In addi tion to this state refunds county and state farmers also received 4c per gallon refund from the federal government. It is estimat ed that federal refunds exceeded $900,600 this year. “Farm Bureau, both state and national, worked hard to get leg islation passed so that farmers could receive these refunds,” Copeland stated. “Almost every farmer now participates in the program. “However, farmers could re ceive more money in refunds each year by filing their applica tions on time and with forms properly completed,” he con tinues. Farmers of Newberry County received $26,190.34 in state tax refunds and Union County farm ers received $7,544.74, the county Farm Bureau president reported. The following club members took part in the project. The blue ribbon winners were: Jerome Bundrick, Judy Davenport, Kenneth Davis, Carol Ann Jones, Karen Pace and David Ridge way. Clarence Abrams and Mike Bishop placed in the red award group. The following had white rib bons: Steve Benjamin, Laura Cauble, Roger Franklin, John Allen Hellams, John Mowbray, and Ottis Patterson. Some of the buyers were: John Earl Smith, T. H. Stevens, A. H Wham, H. P. Lindsey, W. R Garrett, H. J. Porter, and Mr Tinsley. Hicks F. Owings was the auctioneer. The interest of these buyers and Mr. Owings keeps the poultry chain going from year to year. County Man Kills Dove Thai Was Banded In 1951 came to the end of his road in Laurens County September 17, just one day less than 12 years after he had been banded a few miles away. The dove, killed by Billy Roy WUson of Hickory Tavern, had been banded—No. 51309030—Sep- teember 18, 1951, by Sidney Lee, Jr., son of Laurens County Game Warden Sidney Lee.
