\ 11, - V THE dJMFON GHBONiCLE Highlights From Clinton High This week CHS’ers have had many things to celebrate. Be sides rejoicing over our thrilling victory over Lexington last Tri- day night they have also been ob serving National School Lunch Week and National Newspaper Week. Our Red Devils certainly de serve the praise of the student body for their fine exhibition Fri day night. They really showed excellent team work in “putting the prongs” to the hard fighting Lexington team. There was cer tainly never a dull moment in the entire struggle as each team took the lead. One could just feel the excite ment in the stands when either team was threatening. Let’s all go to Union tomorrow and give the Devils all the vocal support we can muster! The clash with Union is sure to be exciting and I know no one will want to miss it!- This week the lunch room staff, headed by Mrs. Cornelia Furr, has been observing National School Lunch Week. The FHA has assisted the lunch room staff by placing fresh flowers on each of the cafeteria tables. Posters with the slogan “Food for Thought” have also been decorat ing the lunch room. Ironically, Mrs. Furr and her staff are probably taken for granted more than anyone else at CHS. About three hundred stu dents file through the cafeteria line daily, but rarely does any one ever thank the members of the lunch room staff for doing so fine a job of preparing hot, nour ishing lunches for us. The next time you enjoy one of their fine lunches, be sure to tell them so. A little well-deserved thanks will make their job a lot easier and more pleasant. I n observance o f National Newspaper Week the Sentinel staff presented its second issue to the student body last Friday, and arranged a display depicting the various steps in publishing a newspaper from writing the story to distributing the printed paper. This Tuesday members of the Sentinel staff attended a district meeting of the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association at Hillcrest High in Simpsonville. Those attend included: Gloria Jackson, associate editor, Con nie Simmons, columnist; Carol Sanders, junior editor; Billy Bal lard, business Manager; Law rence Leopard, sports editor; and Mrs. Lewis Wallace, faculty ad visor. The group attended a business session at which officers for next year were elected and then broke up into groups for workshop ses sions on editorials, make-up, columns, features, news writing, advertising, and sports. Also, this Tuesday the Student Council sponsored College Day for the Senior Class. Over thirty area colleges and universities, nursing schools, and business col leges sent representatives who spoke informally with the seniors and tried to help each decide on the right school for him. All this week and last the seniors have been diligently struggling to sell their self-ap pointed goal of $9,000 worth of magazine subscriptions. The pro ceeds of this sale go toward fi nancing their Washington trip in By DiSHlE DELANY the spring. Wednesday four Clintonian staff members, Sister Blalock and Janet Hamer, co-editors, and Betty Mae Baldwin, junior co- editors, attended foe state year book convention at Lander Col lege in Greenwood. Accompanied by Miss Francis Sheely, the girls attended business sessions and looked over annuals from other schools throughout the state. This year Sister is serving the state organization as its secretary. The Science Chib will hold its monthly meeting Monday night at 7:30 in Mrs. Crawford’s room. It is important that all members plan to attend this meeting since plans for projects, necessary to retain membership, will be dis cussed. All CHS’ers are rejoicing over the recent announcement, made by R. p. Wilder, principal of CHS, that there will be no school Monday. This unexpected holiday has come about because of a state-wide census on school drop-outs, which will be made by the teachers Monday. Congratulations are due to Jane Johnson, recently elected as Miss Hi Miss by the Junior Class, and to Sister Blalock, who was recently named Student of the Month. Security Question—My sister and her husband are divorced. She has the children. He receives disabil ity payments from social secur ity. Can’t my sister’s children get benefit payments from their fath er’s account? Answer — It’s possible. Tell your sister to visit the social se curity office. Question—I’m 67 and operate a filling station. I only cleared $1860 in 1962. Would I be due any social security checks for last year? Answer—You may be able to get some benefits. I suggest you get in touch with the social se curity office immediately to ap ply for benefits. Question—I had two men work ing for me last year on my farm. My son says I’m supposed to pay social security on them. Is he right? Answer—Maybe. A farm work er comes under social security if he is paid at least $150 for the year. He’s also covered if he works on your farm for at least 20 days during the year and is paid on a time basis (by the hour, day, week, or month). Question—Do you have a book let that tells people how long they have to work unde? social se curity to get benefit payments when they retire? Answer—Yes. Booklet 39.
