I’m reminded of several things: The late Charlton DuRant, well known as a lawyer and as a high-ranking brother of our Methodists of South Carolina, once told me of a prayer of a saint who cherished the mem ory of President Theodore Roosevelt. The old saint was devoutly in prayer and asked the Lord to bless President Roosevelt, then added “Theo dore Roosevelt, Lord.” He didn’t want the Lord to misap ply His blessing. The Rough- Rider, the hero of San Juan Hill in Cuba, was the hero of our Methodist Saint Now my story needs a word of introduction. When President Roosevelt (Theodore, rsmwn- ber) was informed of the seiz ure be acted with the prompti tude and vigor which once characterized American policy. He didn’t negotiate, or trade, or offer millions of dollars of food and medicine, with pro longed dilly-dallying, as shames us today. He struck at the heart of the problem and fired off that resounding message: both hands to simplify dining as the lurepeana da. Whatever the origins might be, most Americans find their fin gers turning to thumbs at least the first few times they try to manipulate their silverware like their European counterparts. Noth with* landing a lot of criti cism we have the best people in the world, the best manners and the best public decency. Of course in Europe, England, and South America I saw many Perdicarus alive or Raisuli uncouth Americans, but taking the nation as a whole I think we have the best conduct in the world. In other countries there are cultured people, but we have them here, too. Contrasted with that there are American solders held in hundreds of millions of dollars of American investments have been confiscated by Cuba and we are writing and talking and negotiating. Oh for a few days of President Roosevelt. (Theo dore, you know). Are the Americans in China or Korea not deserving of con sideration? “Millions for defense but not one cent for tribute.” Well, that’s old stuff, eh? Today we seem to talk big at times, while really doing thus: “Millions for ransom but no re gard for the dignity or honor of America!! President Roosevelt (still Theodore) sent an American fleet around the world as a demonstration of power, though in the name of friendly cour- tsey. We stood squarely in as sertion of our dignity and pow er as a nation. Today we ne gotiate and pour out billions in gifts for a reason I can’t see other than the squandernig of the taxpayers’ money in a feeble gesture of goodwill that is utterly futile. If we build our strength here we shall have all the force and influence inherent in that strength. Then we need a man, a man like Roosevelt. Theodore, re member. Our latest wild plunge is to save India. Surely we are not saving India from Communism for Russia, also, is saving In dia. I again point out that in for mer years this nation was re spected by France under Na poleon and Kings: it was re spected by Russia under the Czars; and Germany under the Kaisers; China under Manda rins and Emperors; South America under Dictators. What do we fear? Do they fear us? Are we able to buy all way ward nations and support all those supposedly friendly? Have we been appreciated and helped by Tito and the oth ers? What they respect is power. Let us be strong, invincibly strong, here at home and they will respect us. We are throw ing away our taxpayers’ hard- earned dollars in a sort of will- o-the-wisp illusion. I urge an immediate halt to all the foreign aid and an im mediate reduction in taxes, while strengthening our own forces. * * • Americans are great travelers they like to go around, if they have either the money or the credit. “What is the main reason why poeple like to travel? The researchers say they go because they like to see other people and how they live. One of the first sights to cap ture the attention of Americans going to Europe, particularly for the first time, is the way in which Europeans handle their knives, forks and spoons. In fact, some people become so fascinated by watching they almost forget to eat. 1 What is so different about the Continental way of dining? Well, for one thing, it involves the si multaneous use of fork and knife. The fork is held in the left hand, the knife in the right. At no time is the knife put down or the fork changed to the right hand. Not only is the knife used for cutting; it also serves to press foods on the back of the fork. According to the late Emily Post, it is the Americans and not the Europeans who are out of step in their eating habits. In her first book on etiquette, pub lished in 1922, she deplored our zig-zag custom of constantly transferring the fork from one hand to the other. Another expert on etiquette, Amy Vanderbilt, be lieves either technique is accept able as long as it is performed with ease and grace. But she feels the Continental style encou rages people to eat too fast and that European women who follow this style often bend too far over the table In a way that is not flattering to them. Tbtre is speculation as to the origin of the two methods and why they d^Ter . Edward Munves, Jr., an an tique dealer, has another theory. He says the American way may be traceable to the robber barons of the 19th century. He says it probably was a form of preten tiousness on their part when they weal respectable. Jamet Beard, the cook book auther, has yet another answer. According to him. If you don’t you are in the same condition spiritually as you would be physically if your lungs wow deprived of air. Prayer is spiritual breathing. It is just as necessary to the soul as air Is to the body. Christ’s disciples asked Him how to pray, and He gave them the matchless Lord’s Prayer which has become the best known and best beloved of all prayers. Unfortunathely too many pray it mechanically without its true meaning. In breathing we inhale oxygen and other useful gases, exhale waste gases. Prayer should be the same. We breathe in the good and breathe out the bad. St. Francis of Assisi who lived in the 13th century wrote many beauti ful prayers. One of the finest is this one: “Lord, make me an in strument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where then is sadness, joy. O Di vine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consiled. as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we areb orn to eter nal life.” This prayer teaches us how to breathe out the bad and breathe in the good, to breathe out our worries and breathe in a new laith in our God. This beautiful prayer teaches us to sow love where there is hatred. Practiced faithfully we learn to acquire a senes of good cheer, affability, poise, peace. Love of God, love of fel- lowmen, love of virtuous living, love of honor and Integrity these are the loves that eliminate jealousy, envy, hatred, greed. True prayer teaches us to for give. We can’t pray more than half through the Lord’s prayer without learning that. Learn to pray in your automobile, and you won’t become irate in traffic jams and mishaps. Learn to pray on foot and you yill learn the art of politeness, courtesy and good will. Learn to pray at your work, and you will be a better work man. Learn to pray as your last act after you get into bed, and you will have the refreshing sat isfaction of a good night’s sleep. Learn to pray and you will live with your God here and hereaf ter. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can aurvive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regu larly and support the Church.
