Two Injured In Crash
Two Whitmire men were injured, one seriously, when the
car in which they were riding; went out of control and slam
med into a concrete bridge abutment about six miles north of
Clinton on State Highway 308, at approximately 0:45 Saturday
night.
State Highway Patrolman T. C. Painter identified the men
as Johnny Williarti .Kendrick, 23, driver of the car, and Bas-
com Hugh Maness. 27. Both men were taken to Bailey Memo
rial Hospital by Gray’s Ambulance Service, where both were
admitted. Kendrick suffered a broken pelvis and oilier minor
injuries. Maness was reported in poor condition, and was
transferred to Self Memorial Hospital, Greenwood, early Sun
day morning.

W. C Gardner, 65
W. C. Gardner, 65, died Tues
day at a local hospital after sev
eral years of declining health.
He was a native of York Coun
ty, son of the late John and Em
ma Gardner. He had lived in
Joanna many years before mov
ing to Clinton in 1950. He was, a
member ,of the First Baptist
Church of Joanna and was a
member of the Woodmen of the
World.
Surviving are two sons. Wil
liam M. Gardner of Clinton, an4
S-Sgt. Harold L. Gardner of
Shaw AFB, Sumter; a daughter,
Mrs. William P. (Evelyn G.) By
ars of Joanna; three brothers,
Rev. Robert A. Gardner of San
ford, N. C.; Hudie L. Gardner
and Freddie H. Gardner, both of
Joanna; a sister, Mrs. Essie Pet
ty of Gaffney; and five grand
children.
, Funeral services will be con
ducted today (Thursday) at 4:00
p. m. at the First Baptist
Church in Joanna by Rev. James
B. Mitchell and Rev. J. W. Spil-
lers. Burial will be in Rosemont
cemetery in Clinton
Pallbearers will be J. C. Thom
as, Hershel Thomason, Gary H.
Holcomb, Herbert Lewis, Lester
Hair and Lewis Murphy.

J. Broadus Pinson
Cross Hill—J. Broadus Pin
son, 78, died at his home last
Wednesday at 8:00 a. m. after a
long illness.
A native of Cross Hill, he was
a son of the late Pinckney and
Elizabeth Austine Pinson. He
was a member of the Cross Hill
Baptist Church, the Men’s Bible
class, was Sunday school su
perintendent for 30 years and
was a former deacon of the
church. He also was a Mason.
In 1900 the church paid tribute
to him in a special service and
designated that Sunday “Broad
us Pinson Day.’’ His wife, Mrs.
Cora Griffin Pinson, died in
1907.
Surviving are two sons,
James B. Pinson, Jr., and Hugh
Griffin Pinson of Cross Hill; a
sister, Mrs. H. R. Jones of
Florence; a brother, B. S. Pin
son of Clinton; and three grand
children.
Funeral services were con
ducted at the Cross HOI Baptist
Church Thursday at 3:00 p. m.
by Rev. W. M. Ussery and
Rev. Roy Coker. Burial was in
Liberty Springs cemetery.
Pallbearers were the follow
ing deacons: Jake Rasor, Jim
my Coleman, Calhoun Pinson,
Benjamin Hill, Reece Cunning
ham, Edward Sharpe, J. A.
Richardson, Archie Hill and
Will Irby Smith.

The body is at Gray Funeral
Home and will be placed in the
church at 3:00 p. m., Thursday.
The family is at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Walter P. Byars,
391 Sims St., Joanna.

Jury Rules In
Hudson DeoHi
Laurens — A coroner’s jury
here ruled Wednesday that Rob-
ilsnn Hudson 44. of Green-
wood, died of injuries sustained
when the truck he was driving
overturned June 1 on Highway
221.
The investigating officer, State
Highway Patrolman L. G. Dob
son, was the only witness to tes
tify at the inquest, conducted by
Coroner Marshall Pressley at the
County Courthouse.
The officer said a passing mo
torist discovered the wrecked
tractor cab around 2 a.m. about
three miles north of here. He
said skid marks at the scene
measured 312 feet. The patrolman
estimated the speed of the vehic
le at the time of the crash as
“at least 70 miles an hour.’
A doctor’s statement read by
Coroner Pressley said the victim
apparently had been pinned be
neath the cab of the truck and
concluded “that the cause of
death was from a crushing blow
to the anterior chest area.”

Mrs. Henderson's Rites
Held On Wednesday
Kinards — Mrs.' Sarah Jane
Crain Henderson, 89, widow of
Robert L. Henderson, died Mon
day morning at a Clinton nurs
ing home after many years of
declining health.
She was a native of Greenville
County, daughter of the late Den
nis and Nancy Bruce Crain. She
had lived in Laurens County
most of her life and had lived
near Kinards since 1919. She was
a member of Fairview Baptist
Church.
Surviving are five ions, Ed
ward C. and Carl G. Henderson,
>oth of Kinards, Dial Henderson
of Whitmire, Lockwood Hender
son of Newberry and Raymond
iendersbn of Vernon, Tex.; three
daughters, Mrs. Raymond Dean
of Whitmire, Mrs. Texie Johnson
of Clinton and Mrs. Annie
Zeaches of St. Petersburg, Fla.;
15 grandchildren; and 17 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. at
’’airview Baptist Church by Rev.
Marion Ringer and Rev. J. R.
VfcKittrick. Burial was in the
church cemetery.

Mrs. A. F. Kelley
Mrs. Mary Collins Kelley, 82,
died Friday afternoon at a Pros
perity clinic after several years
of declining health.
A native of Georgia, she was
a daughter of the late Jerry and
Della O’Shields Collins. She lived
in South Carolina most of her
life and in Laurens County ‘ a
number of years and was a Bap
tist. Her husband was the late
A. F. Kelley. She was the last
surviving member of her imme
diate family.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.
W. I. Marlowe of Washington,
D. C.; five sons, Ross D. Kelley
of Lexington, N. C., Oss N. Kel
ley of Norfolk, Va., Teneight R.
Kelley of Whitmire, Taft T. Kel
ley of Newebrry and Wallace R.
Kelley of Washington, D C.; -17
grandchildren; and 31 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted Monday at 3 p.m. at Gray
James B. Mitchell and Rev. I. H.
Funeral Home in Clinton by Rev.
Webb. Burial was in Rosemont
Cemetery, Clinton.
