Here On Tuesdays

ogist with the Area 5 Mental
Health Center in Greenwood, now
visits Clinton every Tuesday aft
ernoon from 2 p.m. until 4:30
p.m.
“In this way we hope to bring
some of the services of the Cen
ter to the people of Clinton,” the
young Greenville native explain
ed this week in the Clinton Health
Clinic where he holds office
hours.
Educated at Davidson, Emory,
Northwestern University Medical
School and with a Ph.D. from
Vanderbilt, Robinson directs the
Mental Health Center in Green
wood which serves a 7-county
area.
Funds for the Center, he ex
plains, comes from a 50-50 share
of county and state taxes, and
operates with the support and as
sistance of County Mental Health
Associations.
Robinson served with the Darl-
ington-Florcnce Mental Health
Center before coming to the Area
5 Center, whose staff now in
cludes the psychologist, a secre
tary and three part-time psychia
trists. “We hope to be able to ob
tain a full-time psychiatrist to
direct the Center,” Robinson
said, “and add two phychiatric
social workers.”
The purpose of the Center and

people who are confronted with
individuals with mental or emo
tional problems.
Who can use Dr. Robinson’s
services and those of the Center?
"Anyone in Laurens County,” he
quickly answers, “They may be
referred to us, but anyone who
wants may write to the Area 5
Mental Health Center in Green
wood and request an appoint
ment. We will arrange for one,
either in Clinton or in Greenwood.
They may call us at the Clinton
Health Clinic during Tuesday aft
ernoon if they wish.”
Fees, he explained, are on a
sliding scale according to ability
to pay and number in the family,
so anyone needing and desiring
help can easily afford the assist
ance.
- The Area 5 Mental Health Cen
ter is under the direction of an
area Mental Health Board, with
representatives from each coun
ty. Dr. Martin Teague of Lau
rens and Mrs. Dell Crews of
Clinton are the Laurens County
representatives.
George G. Sumerel
Laurens — George Gary Sum
erel, 72, of the Wattsville com
munity, died late Wednesday aft
ernoon at a local hospital after a
long illness. ^
He was a native of Laurens
County, son of .the late J. L.
(Fate) and Lei a Nelson Sumerel.
He was a retired carpenter and a
member of Lucas Avenue Baptist
Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Mattie Hazel Sumeral; two sons,
Winfred Sumerel and Kenneth
Sumerel, both of Laurens; four
daughters, Mrs. Neil Dockery and
Mrs. Harold Owens, both of Lau
rens, Mrs. Walter Owens of Mc-
Adenville, N.C., and Mrs. Myrtle
Walsh of Greensboro, N.C.; three
brothers, R. B. Sumerel of Lau
rens, Elmo Sumerel of Hot
Springs, N.C., and Rhett Sumer
el of Easley; a sister, Mrs. Ora
Hazel of Laurens; 20 grandchil
dren; and six great-grandchil
dren.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at 3 p.m. Friday at Lucas
Avenue Baptist Church by Rev.
Alvin Boone and Rev. R. C.
Craine. Burial will be in Rose
Hill Cemetery.
Mayes Leads Gass
In GvH Engineering
Citadel Cadet Whitefield Mayes
of Clinton and Thornwdl, has
been selected to receive the 1963
Colonel Louis LeTellier Award
for his attainment of the highest
academic average in the Depart
ment of Civil Engineering at The
Citadel, Charleston. He will be
presented the award by Gen.
Mark W. Clark in a colorful cere
mony at an awards review on
May 30.
The award is presented annual
ly by the Civil Engineering De
partment to the graduating Civil
Engineer who has achieved the
highest academic standing in the
department. It was provided by
friends of Col. Louis Shepherd
LeTellier, long-time head of the
Department of Civil Engineer
ing, and Acting President of The
Citadel from June 1953 until
March 1954, prior to the arrival
of Gen. Clark, current president
of the military college. The a-
ward consists of a specially-in
scribed large Department Plaque
which will remain at The Citadel,
and a smaller replica of it which
Cadet Mayes will retain.
Cadet Mayes is a graduate of
Thornwell High School, Clinton.
The Blue Stocking
Wins Six Awards
The Presbyterian College stu
dent newspaper. The Blue Stock
ing, is the winner of six general
and individual awards bestowed
recently by the South Carolina.
Collegiate Press Association.
This student weekly, which has
been rated All-American consis
tently by the Associated Collegi
ate Press in past years, was
named the state’s top newspaper
among colleges with student
bodies under 1,000. Awards also
were made to The Blue Stocking
for the best front page and the
best special page in this class.
Individual citations for efforts
of the past year by PC newsmen
went to Editor DuPont Smith of
Decatur, Ga., for the best edi
torial and the best news story,
and to A1 Pearce of Rocky Mount,
N. C., for the best sports story.
SCORES HOLE-IN-ONE
Mrs. George R. Blalock made
a hole-in-one at Lakeside Coun
try Club last Thursday, May 23.
The winning shot was made
with a number 3 wood on the
seventeenth hole, a par three.,
140 yard hole.
