It was then that telephone lines were first brought together in a network so that many radio stations could broadcast the same program. Later, telephone companies began providing channels for television transmission. By 1963 the Bell System maintained over 90,000 channel miles of TV network serving TV stations in about'320 cities coast-to-coast. • * * • ] IN AUGUST 1904, a local New Jersey newspaper went out on a limb with this prediction: “It is probable that most everyone will have’ both phones and autos before long.” Thu rash statement was made after a report had been received that “The Bell Telephone Company had a gang here this week erecting poles and installing a couple of phones, making nine in all we have here now.** Fur thermore, “Eleven automobiles were seen in town on the previous weekend.” By now we feel it is safe to report that both the telephone and the automobile have proven suc cessful, in New Jersey and elsewhere. * • • • BELL SYSTEM PLAYS VITAL ROLE IN NATIONAL EMERGENCY .. .
