BRINGING ENTERTAINMENT INTO AMERICAN
HOMES has been a job of the telephone industry since
1923. It was then that telephone lines were first brought
together in a network so that many radio stations could
broadcast the same program. Later, telephone companies
began providing channels for television transmission. By
1963 the Bell System maintained over 90,000 channel
miles of TV network serving TV stations in about'320
cities coast-to-coast.

IN AUGUST 1904, a local New Jersey newspaper went
out on a limb with this prediction: “It is probable that
most everyone will have’ both phones and autos before
long.” Thu rash statement was made after a report had
been received that “The Bell Telephone Company had a
gang here this week erecting poles and installing a couple
of phones, making nine in all we have here now.** Fur
thermore, “Eleven automobiles were seen in town on the
previous weekend.” By now we feel it is safe to report that
both the telephone and the automobile have proven suc
cessful, in New Jersey and elsewhere.
