Social Security
There can be no doubt that
Social Security benefits are
helping to stabilize the income
and spending power of many
residents in Laurens County,
Miss Martha Pressly, district
manager of the Soeial {Security
office in Greenwood, said today
in releasing annual county bene
fit data report.
Miss Pressly noted that as of
December 31, 1902, some 4,341
persons in Laurens County were
collecting about $2,752,140 an
nually from social security, an
increase of about 10 per cent
over 1961. Monthly benefits first
became payable in January,
1940, and they have continued
without interruption for 23
years, accompanied by a steady
growth in the number of bene
ficiaries. “This increase can be
attributed to the changes in the
law in recent years, as well as
to the growth of our aged popu
lation,” Miss Pressly said.
“This money simulates county
business; most of it is spent for
food, clothing and shelter.”
More p e o p 1 e in Laurens
County, she said, could draw
social security benefits if they
knew more about the law, and
for that reason they are urged
to visit or call the local social
security office whenever they
have a question concerning
their benefits or responsibilities.
As of January, 1963, in the na
tion at large, more than 18 mil
lion beneficiaries were receiving
payments at the rate of $14 bil
lion per year.
The average monthly old-age
retirement benefit in January
was $78.19 for all states, while in
the state of South Carolina the
average was $63.68, Miss Pressly
said.
The following table shows the
number and amount of each type
of monthly benefit paid in Lau
rens County as of December 31,.
1962.
Rehired workers, 1803, $1,303,-
176; dependents of retired work
ers, 600, $219,916; dependents of
deceased workers, 1946, $60,664;
disabled workers and dependents,
663, $466,384.
