Teams Given Recreation Program Practice started this week for Dixie Youth baseball—formerly called Little Boy’s League, her alded the beginning of Clinton Recreation Commission’s sum mer program. D. Hie Clinton high school football and baseball star is currently in his first spring training in organized baseball. As of last Friday, he had gone to bat in Class AAA competi tion 52 times and had collected 20 hits for a .568 average. Seven teen of his hits, including three home runs, have been collected from the left side. He became a switch hitter in spring training this year. He normally batted right. One of his home runs was an inside-the-park hit and two of the three have been against Class AAA pitching. Sumerol To Be In Army AHfift Army Pfc. James M. Sumeral, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh L. Sumeral, of Clinton, is a mem ber of the 1st Battle Group of the 38th Infantry which is scheduled to be airlifted to Ft. Benning, Ga., from Germany in mid- April, under the ROTAPLAN troop rotation system. ROTAPLAN is designed to ex pedite the movement to troops between the United States and Europe. The battle group has been stationed in Germany for the past six months. Sumeral, a machine gunner in the group s Company C, entered the Army in April, 1981. Youth, 10-12 year-olds, will be gin play on May 8. Teams and coaches were named this week. They include: Kiwanis, Sam Owens, coach; Exchange, Jimmy. Braswell, coach; Lions, Wallace Patterson, coach; Moose, Truman Owens, coach; Joanna, Hack Prater, ^coach; and Whitmire, coached by Charlie Brown. The schedule for play is now set for one game per day with double headers on Friday night until school is out. During the summer vacation, there will be no Monday games, double head ers on Tuesday and Friday nights and single games on Wed nesday and Thursday afternoons. Palmetto League, for boys 13* 14, will open May 23 on the Jun ior High playground field. Dou ble headers will be played on Tuesday and Friday nights, with singles on Wednesday and Thurs day afternoons. Six teams are also slated for Palmetto play: Thornwell, Sam Owens, coach; Lydia, Jimmy Braswell, coach; Bailey, Tru man Owens, coach; Hampton, Wallace Patterson, coach; Joan na, Hack Prater, coach; and Whitmire, Charlie Brown, coach. A small fry league for boys, 8- 10 will feature five squads: Thornwell, Lydia, Bailey, Hamp ton and Joanna. Coaches have not been named. Harry Bouknight will direct two softball teams for girls. A new league is being formed this year for all boys not mem bers of Small Fry, Dixie Youth or Palmetto teams. Coached by Hap McSween, the league will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, May 28 at 10 a. m. at Dixie Youth park. All of the games will be play ed at 10 a. m. on weekdays, alter nating with Small Fry games. Tennis will be included in the program, but a director for the summer months has not been selected. Joanna Baptisb Schedule Revival First Baptist Church, Joanna, will begin revival services Sun day, April 21, ending Sunday, April 28. Services will be held each even ing at 7:30 p. m. The speakers will be Dr. Enoch C. Brown, pastor of Shandon Baptist Church, Columbia. Dr. Brown is a graduate of Quachita College. Arkedelphia, Arkansas, and Southwestern Baptist Theolo gical Seminary, Fort Worth, Tex. He has been pastor of Shandon Baptist Church since 1987 and is presently serving as a member of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. He recently completed a two year term of service as president of the Southwestern Baptist Theolo gical Seminary Alumni Associa- oa. Madden, 65 Waterloo—Mrs. Louise Daven port Madden, 66, died at her borne April 10, after several years of illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Laurens County, dau ghter of the late John and Fan nie Crawford Davenport. She was a member of Lakeside Pen tecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are her husband, James Kelly Madden; three sons, John W. and Otis Watt, both of Waterloo, and James Watts of Ware Shoals; two brothers, Sid ney Davenport and J. K. Daven port, both of Waterloo; a sister, Mrs. Fair belle Bagwell of Bates- burg; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. *' Funeral services were conduct ed Saturday afternoon at Lake side Pentecostal Holiness Church by Rev. Miss Louise McCall, 33, of near Clinton, died at Bailey Me morial Hospital around 8:30 a. m. last Thursday from burns suf fered whan her bed caught fire a short time earlier at her home. Laurens County Coroner Mar shall Pressley said that burns covered about 90 per cent of her body and that the fire apparent ly resulted from smoking in bed. The fire was discovered by her mother, Mrs. Andred McCall, who awoke smelling smoke. Opening a bedroom door, she found the room, occupied by four sleeping persons, including three of her children, filled with smoke. With the aid of an older son who slept upstairs, she moved her three children and a relative to another room, but Miss Mc Call was already unconscious, her nightclothing nearly burned away. Mrs. McCall and her son ex tinguished the flames. The vic tim was rushed to the local hos pital, where she died a few min utes later, Sheriff Eugene John son stated. No inquest is planned, Coroner Pressley said. Others investigat ing were Deputy Wallace Aber crombie and Assistant Police Chief Bill Blakely. Miss McCall was a native of Williams ton, but had lived in Laurens County 10 years. Surviving are her parents, An drew and Sophie McDonald Mc Call of Rt. 1, Clinton, near Lydia Mill; three sisters, Mrs. Lona Petty, Mrs. Mary Bradley and Mrs. Shirley Hawkins, all of Lockhart; five brothers, Ernest McCall of the U. S. Air Force, Franklin, Samuel and Billy Ray McCall, ail of the home, and Jes sie McCaU of Rt. 1, Clinton. Funeral services were conduct ed Saturday afternoon at the Mi lam Rdad Church of God by Rev. C. H. Graham and Rev. Horace Weathers. Burial was in Rose- raont Cemetery. Pallbearers were Eddie Gra ham, Donnie and Raymond Franklin, James Overstreet, Gray and Connie Griffin. Cancer Group Holds Annual Banquet Here The Laurens County unit of the American Cancer Society held its annual Cancer Crusade banquet in Clinton Monday night. Over two hundred attended the event in the Mary Mus grove Ho tel and heard Spartanburg sur geon Dr. Charles B. Hanna tell that in 25 years fewer than one in five cancer victims were treat ed successfully. “Now we’re sav ing one out of three patients,’’ he said. - ~ Mrs. Sara D. DeLoach, com mander of the Laurens Coimty unit of the American Cancer Society, presented certificates to five volunteer workers “for dedi cated work over the years in the Cancer Crusade." L. Wickham at Thornwell Lake House on Tuesday evening, April 9. President T. J. Copeland pre sided. Mrs. Agnes Bailey, secre tary, read a copy of the letter which mailed to Governor Rus sell on March 15, 1983, stating that Laurens County Farm Bu- reau jR^uld like to go on record as opposing the Trotters Shoals project. A copy of another letter which was mailed to John L. Mc Millan was read asking that any committee action on the feed grain program be deferred until the wheat referendum had been decided on. v . t- President Copeland introduced James F. Fleming, field repre sentative of South Carolina Farm Bureau, who told the group that at the ehd of March Laurens County was plus 18 in member ship as compared with March of 1962. Mrs. T. J. Copeland, women’s chairman, gave a brief outline G, Thursday, AjHl 18, IMS as to what was discussed la the state women’s meeting she had attended recently in Columbia, the highlights being emphasis on Farm Bureau and youth. Mrs. Copeland recommended that our young people be encouraged to read the type of literature that would enlighten them on just what is happening all over the world today.
