where there is love and affec
tion, and where it is displayed.
Parents should riot hesitate to
Show their affection for one an
other in the presence of the chil
dren. It has a good effect on
them.
Next, there should be wise dis
cipline applied by the parents
together. Quickly children, learn
to play one parent against the
other, so there must be absolute
unity in the application of dis
cipline. Children actually do not
respect parents they can push
around. This lack of respect will
also work against their love for
their parents. ; ^ ~
Thirdly, parents must give
their children 1 a right sense of
values. These are learned in the
~ Fourthly, parents must train
their children to learn to make
right decisions for themselves.
The possessive parent not only
handicaps the child in reaching
emotional maturity, but also
greatly endangers their chances
for happiness in marriage. Moth
ers are much more prone to be
possessive than fathers. And in
too many cases mother love be
comes “smother love,” where
overly domineering mothers try
to keep their -children dependent
on them for life. In much of ray
domestic counseling, parental
dominance has been a large fac
tor.
We can take a lesson from the
birds. The mother bird is indefa
tigable in gathering food for her
young. But she does not coddle
them or try to hold on to Them
after they learn to fly. Actually,
she may sometimes push her
young out of the nest'when she
thinks they should learn to flyt
Much of the confusion and re
bellion in adolescence is dnb Ul
the fact that teen agers are in
the process of growing up on ev
ery level. They need to feel the
security of a home where parents
exercise wise discipline. At the
same time they need to be taught!
how to make decisions for them
selves. The high incidence of
marriage breakdown walks hand
i in hand with juvenile delinquen
cy. It all goes back to the home.
