Marvin is one of the few young men who is willing to provide what it takes to live with the soil. Marvin had nothing to start with. He now owns all the ma chinery be used, he has purchas ed approximately 60 acres of land and built a home. Marvin man ages Mrs. J. G. Roy’s farm of about 40 Oacres, near Laurens. The dominant enterprises are cotton and beef cattle. He evi dently is doing well with both. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson. L. B. Massey, District Exten sion Agent, C1 e m s o n College, made an excellent talk concern ing the relationship of farm and industry. He stated that today’s factory worker could purchase twice the food per hour of work that he could in 1940. He brought out, the fact that America should appreciate the wonderful supply of high quality food and clothing it now affords, and priced reason ably. This is due partly to the extreme cold weather we had in Decem ber. The cold weather reduced grazing to almost zero, and farmery have had to feed hay and grain most all winter. We should begin to have some warm weather that should start grass on the way back. It would pro bably be wise to make an appli- catjoh of nitrogen to grazing at this time so that it will be avail- when we do have a warm "spell, i Farmers in the cattle business should have more summer pas tures, bermuda grass, and keep cattle off winter pastures during summer and grass that is no (all. There is suited for year around grazing. It takes both fes cue and bermuda. Now is a good time to dean up some of those branch "and creek bottoms and plant it in bermuda in March and April. Clinton Hi-Lights By MARJORIE ARNOLD Hats off to the Clinton High Devilaires! CHS’s swinging stage band recently had the honor of being asked to play for the Re serve Oficers Association dinner at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Ga. Accompanying the group on the three-day trip last week-end were Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Reddeck, Mr. and Mrs. Avery Smith, and R. E. Martin. The students and adults, guests of the 445th Troop Carrier Wing at the base, left Clinton on Sat urday morning, February 9, and returned t he next afternoon. While in Georgia the group visit ed historical points of interest around Marietta and Atlanta and enjoyed such activities as seeing movies of the Air Force Thunder- bird precision flying team, tour ing a C123 Troop Carrier, watch ing the actual proceedings in the flight tower at the base, and see ing the famed Cyclorama. While these activities can hard ly be called work, the group real ly played Saturday night when they entertained at the Reserve Officers Asociation dinner at the Capitol City Country Club. From all the comments heard around CHS, it would be hard to say just who enjoyed the event most—the Devilaires or their hosts! • * • Two thousand, two hundred, and seventeen dollars—that’s the grand total raised by the Teen- Age Division of the March of Dime? Co- chairmen of the drive, Sister Bla lock and 'Janet Hamer, ended the drive with the car wash last Saturday. • • • Emphasis was placed on Alco hol Education Week as Laurens County Sheriff Eugene Johnson spoke to the student body last Friday. Sheriff Johnson stressed the great number of illegal whis- key stills in the South and the danger of drinking a product made under such conditions as “moonshine” is often made. * * * The Student Council of CHS will sponsor a canteen for CHS students at the high school on Saturday, February 16. Boys will wear suits and ties and-the girls will wear dressy dresses. Tickets are 50c stag*and 75c a couple. Y’all come! < ^ Mrs. Lfflie HiHey Laurens—Mrs. Lillie Dickson ■’Smith Hilley, 78, died early Fri day morning at a local hospital after a brief illness. She was a native of Spartan burg County, a daughter of the late Monroe and Josephine Cox Dickson. She was a mmeber of the Second Baptist Church. Surviving are four sons, Wil lie J., John W., Floyd and Rob ert Smith, all of Laurens; w Ti daughter, Mrs. E. G. Adams of Greenwood; a brother, G. ' M. Dickson, of Greenwood; five sisters, Mrs. Prunie HiU of Westminster; Mrs. L. C. Obar of Cocoa, Fla.; Mrs. Emmis Nix of Columbia; Mrs. Delia Hill of Mooresville, N. C.; and Mrs. Nettie Tannery of Colum bia. ^ Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at 3:00 p. m. at the Second Baptist Church by Rev. Grange S. Cothran and Rev. Ray Craine.
