Mr. and Mrs. John Cheek of
Route 3, Laurens are certainly to
be commended for their beauti
ful home and farm. Needless to
say that John has done a tremen
dous amount of work to bring it
all about. The field across the
road from the home is far from
what it was a few year! back.

Beef cattle seem to be gaining
ground with part-time farmers. A
lot of our citizens that are em
ployed full time have a nice beef
what ft wis a Tew years back,
line. This not only gives extra
income but improves the value
of the farm greatly. -

Reports received from the Hol
stein Association, show Gene
Brown and Sons have 35 Regist
ered Holsteins on test that aver
age over 12,000 pounds of milk.
No doubt this is one of the top
Holstein groups in the state. Con
gratulations to the Browns.

- Bob Wickham of Thorn well in
forms me that Thornwell has a
Registered Guernsey that finish
ed a lactation with over 13,000
pounds of milk and 600 pounds
of butter fat. Congratulations to
Bob and all the boys at Thorn
well.

Looking over our DH1A re
cords, we find a great deal of
improvement over a few years
back. Records ending in Octo
ber, show that Laurens County
had seven animals completing
lactation with over 14,000 pounds
of milk each. Ralph Waldrep had
4 of the seven, and White Plains
had three. The top animals pro
duced 18,780 pounds of milk in
305 days and belonged to White
Plains. I don’t suppose there is
another animal in the county
that'has that record beat.
Three of our dairy farmers
made the top twenty in the state.

The cold weather evidently did
not damage small grain as was
expected. Some grain sown about
the time the freese came will
.probably have to be sown over.
Reports from Clemson show
the boll weevil population to be
about the same as last year.
There is so much litter and or
ganic matter for Insects to hib
ernate that we will probably
never have fewer ^weevils than
we now have. - r
Mrs. W. L. Martin reports that
she and her sons picked 60 (500
pound) bales of cotton from 37
acres. If we keep getting reports,
we will find that two bale per
acre yet. Congratulations to
Mrs. Martin and sons.
