visit with the former’s sister,
Mrs. Rhett P. Adair and Mr.
Adair. Also visiting the Adairs
during the week were her sister,
Mrs. C. F. Lathan of Newberry
and niece, Mrs. T. L. Bridges of
Rock Hill.

Col. and Mrs. Arthur J. Katz-
burg and sons, Steven and Rich
ard are here for a several weeks
visit with Mrs. Katzburg’s sis
ter, Mrs. Harry Baldwin and Mr.
Baldwin. They have been in the
Azores for the past two years
in August to the Air Force Base
Hospital, Myrtle Beach. Steven
will be sophomore at Massachus-
settes Institute of Technology,
Cambridge, Mass, and Richard
will be a high school senior next
year.
Mrs. James F. Leighton, Jr., of
Storrs, Conn., and Charleston,
West Virginia, is spending two
weeks here as the guest of Dr.
and Mrs. John W. Stevenson. She
and Mrs. Harvey Hood of Hen
dersonville.
Mr. Wharton observed his 10lst
birhtday last Tuesday (July 10).
A year ago, on the occasion of
his 100th birthday, Phi .Delta
Theta “brothers” throughout the
country sent him greetings.
President Eisenhower sent him
personal birthday greetings on
his 90th. The President and Mr.
Wharton’s son, Col. James P.
Wharton, served in the Army to
gether at Fort Meade, Md.
While he was in Greenwood he
was a member of Main Street
Methodist Church where he was
a steward and trustee and taught
a young ladies’ class in the
church school. He was also a
trustee of the Greenwood Public
Schools for a number of years
Surviving are three daughters,
Mrs. Harvey Hood of Henderson-
yillei Mrs. J. R. Breazeale and
Mrs. A. M. Easterby of Green
ville; two sons, James R. Whar
ton of Hendersonville and Earle
M. Wharton of Ware Shoals; sev
en grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren and great-
great-grandchildren. His wife,
Mrs. Sidney Pierce Wharton, died
a number of years ago.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at Blyth Funeral Home Mon
day at 3:00 p. m. by Dr. Bryce
Herbert, Dr. M. T. Morton and
Rev. S. R. Glenn. Burial was In
Magnolia cemetery.

Sautrday afternoon at Hender
sonville, N. C., after several
days of illness.
He was born In Waterloo in
Laurens County, a son of the
late John H. Wharton and Mrs.
Jane Allen Fuller Wharton.
Mr. Wharton was graduated
from Wofford College In the class
of 1887 and was the oldest alum
nus of the college. He was a
member of Phi Delta Theta fra
ternity.
After his graduation from Wof-
ford he taught school at Waterloo
for several years. He moved to
Greenwood and was In Mis bank
ing business for several yean
before opening the J. B. Whar
ton Store, a ladies’ ready-to-wear
shop, which he operated until Ms
retirement in 1800.
