Book of Genesis Must Be Squared With
!, Says Dr. Cunningham, Former Dean
“The Book of Genesis must be
squared with science or it will
go down,” Dr. G. W. Cunning
ham, retired dean of the gradu
ate school of Cornell University,
told the Laurens Rotary Club
here Thursday.
Dr. Cunningham, author of nu
merous books on philosophy, was
professor of philosophy at the
University of Texas, Cornell and
other schools before becoming
dean of the graduate school at
Cornell.
Referring to the recent contro
versy at the meeting of the
Southern Baptist Convention over
an inierpretitive book on Genesis
published by the Baptist Sunday
School Board, Dr. Cunningham
said, “I’ve been so upset about
this that I had to speak about it’
Dr. Cunningham, a native of
Laurens, where he lives in retire
ment, and a graduate of Furman
University, declared that “It is
a tragic mistake to suppose that
we can speak with authority
about the nature of the universe.”
“A theology that takes that po
sition is doomed — not at the
grass roots because people will
accept what they are told, but at
the he ad streams,’’ he continued.
Declaring that there is no con
flict between science and religion,
the Baptist layman said:
“Science is the search for the
facts. Religion, fundamentally,
Is a search for values, goodness,
ideals, Justice. It is not a gift—
it is a search.”
The conflict, he said, is be
tween science and theology.

"The trouble with the theologian
is that he thinks he knows what
the truth is bfeore he investi
gates the facts.”
Dr. Cunningham referred to
early scientists, Includini: Caper-
nicus and Galilea, whose scien
tific discoveries were scoffed at
by theologians of the day and
who in some cases were tortur
ed and killed.
“The theologian,” he said, “did
not ask whether it was true—but
whether it was orthodox.”
