Morals of The
New Frontier
By THUBMAN SENSING
“Ask not what your country
can do for ym fait what you
can do for your country,” said
Jofefi F. Kennedy in his In
augural address. It was an in
spiring statement, and one ap
good Americans can endorse.
But evidence is now at hand
which shows that the first mes
sage of the new president was
not heeded by all inside his ad-
of Labor—a sub-cabinet
officer with high responsibilities
—acknowledged that he had a
cepted a $1,000 gift from a per
son now under indictment on
charges of fraud. The New Fron
tier official said he accepted the
gift because he was unable to
live within his $30,000-a-year sal
ary.
This disclosure may be only
the first little wind from a veri
table storm of scandal blowing
up the Potomac. Newspapers
across the country are reporting
some- very strange doings in the
handling of goveraaneat agricul
ture programs. Accusations have
been made against Agriculture
Department officials. Three of
them, have resigned or been fired
thus far.
Whatever the full extent of dis-
closure. there already is much
available for good ctiizens to
ponder. If there is something rot
ten in some elements of the New
Frontier, what went wrong?
Wasn’t the New Frontier ship of
state supposed to be maimed by
idealists?
The answer is not hard to find
for those who want to find it. In
the first place, government gets
out of hand because it gets too

of dollars are spent <m programs
that are hand-outs, then the
temptation exists for shrewd ope
rators to get a bigger share of
the hand-outs.
When government starts pay
ing people for doing nothing, then
the slick manipulator says to
himself that he can arrange to
get paid more than anyone else.
When a nation’s foreign policy
consists of w**M«g gifts to influ
ence people. Is It soi prising that
some officials allow this philoso
phy to carry over into their jper-
sonal Fees? admtois-
iration practices favoritism,
quietly handling Big Unionism
gifts under the table while loudly
berating more responsible ele
ments in the nation, one should
not be amazed that individual
favoritism also becomes a prac
tice in government
Ini short, the New Frontier
philosophy is one of handouts, tn-
Moce-peddling and favoritism,
both nationally and internation
ally. Oh, It’s all on a high- mind
ed plane, or so the egghead pro
fessors insist. They scorn the
small city business men and
practical citizen who want a
day’s work for a days’ pay. To
the liberals, the conservative eth
ic is old-fashkmed. It isn’t con
sidered in New Frontier circles
to tell unionists that they must
produce more in order to earn
more pay. Telling the Glumians
to build their own dame—well,
that simply isn’t done under the
new regime in Washington. In
stead, a political sharpie passes
over raofcAy or benefits to those
who wink and say they will vote
right. The union leaders ptwiiae
to deliver ttw urban votes. The
postage stamp African state
promises to deliver its vote in the
U. N.
But a country cannot long I
operate on that kind of degrad
ing philosophy. When a nation |
bases its policies, both domestic
and foreign handouts, influence-!
peddling and favoritism, it is on
the road to ruin. And the first
kind of ruin is moral ruin—the
worst kind of all. Policies de
signed to woo votes become cor
rupting of government officials
and the citizenry. Income tax
chiseling becomes a game for
smart alecks. Profiteering from
government programs becomes e
field for exploitation. And, grad
ually, a good government goes |
to pieces in moral dissolution.
This, then, is the real meaning I
of the unpleasant news coming
from Washington. The greatest
damage the New Frontier is do
ing is not to oar finances but to|
our national morality.
