If the Annual staff is displaying
bigger smiles than usual, its be
cause they sent the Annual off
Friday for its first prinUM. All
the staff members reafly “burn
ed the midnight oil” Thursday in
order to meet the deadline. If you
have heard rumors as to the site,
color, and contents, you wtH Just
have to wait until May to'verify
them. Whatever the outcome, I
am sure everyone will be well
pleased.

“Safety in the State for Buses,
Pedestrians and Car Drivers”
was the topic of the South Caro
lina Safety Convention held in
Columbia last Friday. Mr. Avery
Smith, director of school bus
transportation, attended the meet
ing. Accompanying him were sev
eral high school students. Among
those going were: Caroline Edge,
Judy Bedenbaugh, Elaine Boyce,
Johnny Walker, and Kenneth
Johnson.

The Transportation Club met
at the high school on Tuesday
night. The organization of the
Transportation Club was dis
cussed with the students who are
planning to take bus driver train
ing in the spring.

The Student Council had a Val
entine dance on Saturday* night.
A large red heart adorned the en
trance to the dance. Cupids were
in all the winndows and a re
freshment table carried out the
Valentine theme. Several prizes
were given.

The coaching staff was in
charge of the chapel program last
Friday. Coach Herman Jackson
spoke on sportsmanship toward
the officials. Coach James Cox
presented views on sportsman
ship of the spectators. The talks
were summed up by head coach
Claude Howe. I am sure each and
every member of the student body
benefitted by this fine discussion.
Let’s all attend and practice good
sportsmanship at our game with
Laurens tomorrow night.

The Beta Club was in charge
of the annual King of Hearts con
test. The votes, which were a
penny each, decided' the winner.
Wilmot Shealy was crowned King
by his escort, Miss Patsy Hender
son, in chapel on Valentine Day.
Seventeen boys were up for the
title and were escorted down the
aisles by their sponsors and
homeroom representatives. Ame
Black and Brenda Fallaw gave
a piano selection as entertainment
for the King. All proceeds go to
ward the expenses of the mem
bers to The Beta Club Convention,
which will be held later this
month.

The Girl Scouts at Joanna are
busy bees these days with Feb
ruary the month of activities for
that organisation. The annual
Girl Scout Cookie Salt is sched
uled tor Feb. Ml with the ob
servance of National Girl Scout
Week from the 11th through the
17th.
Announcement has been made
that a now variety of cookie has
been added this year, the peanut
butter sandwich. The older va
rieties, chocolate mints, creme
sandwich, and shortbread cook
ie, will be available, and Jo-
annlans will welcome this op
portunity to encourage the Scout-
ers in their summer camping
plans since the profit from the
sales will be used for camping
expenses not covered by camp
ers’ fees.
Of special significance to Girl
Scouts this year is the fiftieth
anniversary of Girl Scouting.
The first troop of Girl Scouts was
organized in Savannah, Geor
gia, March 12, 1912 by Juliette
Low who brought Girl Scouting
to America from England. The
local units are planning special
service observances of this “Gol
den Jubilee” year.
Joanna will have the privUege
of sending a local Girl Scout to
the Senior Round Up in Vermont
for 10 days in July of this year.
.Scout Melinda Stroud, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Gray Stroud, is
at 1 this time training for that
event. Melinda will receive her
Curved Bar in May of this year,
the highest rank earned in Girl
Scouting. The earning of the
Curved Bar will make possible
Melinda’s attendance at the state
wide Curved Bar Tea to be given
at the Governor’s Mansion in Co
lumbia in May. This is 3 real
recognition for all South Carolina
Girl Scouts who have applied
themselves so diligently to com
plete sufficient proficiency badg
es to achieve this rank.
