Criminal Court
Ends Wednesday,
Leaving Nine Cases
Laurens—Two jury trials took
up most of the final day of Gen
eral Sessions Court here Wednes
day. Judge Julius B. Ness ad
journed the court at 8:00 p. m.
with nine cases remaining on the
docket.
Judge Ness explained that fail
ure to try the cases was not the
fault of the solicitor who, the;
judge said, was ready for trial in;
each case.
The judge commended Solicitor j
W. T. Jones of Greenwood for the
manner in which he prepared and
disposed of the cases.
Sheriff R. Eugene Johnson also
was praised by Judge Ness for
the number of arrests made at
liquor still sites since he took
office in January.
The judge said that the sheriff
had found 10 persons at stills this
year and noted that he believed
it was a record.
In a trial begun late Tuesday
and completed Wednesday, a jury
returned a guilty verdict in the
case of Hazel Davis, Negro,
charged with receiving stolen
goods. She was sentenced to two
years, suspended on service of
five months, and three years of
probation.
In the same case, James Willie
Dendy, Negro, was charged with
housebreaking and larceny and
won a directed verdict of inno-
cence on the motion of his attor
ney, Marshall Abercrombie.
In the final jury trial, Emerson
Johnson, Negro, was found not
guilty of a charge of drunken
driving.
The case of Frank O’Shields,
19-year-old Laurens youth, charg
ed on two counts of involuntary
manslaughter and reckless homi
cide in connection with the auto
wreck deaths of John H. Locklear,
17, and Richard Gambrell, 17,
was granted a continuance until
the November term of court on
motion of his attorney.
Guilty pleas and sentences fol
low :
Willie C. Herbert, involuntary
manslaughter, three years, sus
pended on service of three months
and five years probation.
James Lewis Bishop, drunken
driving, fourth offense; four years
and $3,000, suspended on service
of eight months and probation of
five years.
Mack Workman, carrying con
cealed weapon; 30 days or $100,
suspended on sixth months proba
tion.
Willie Williams, assault and
battery of a high and aggravated
nature; six months, suspended,
with 18 months probation.
Robert Foggie and Willie Fog-
gie, engaging in motor vehicle
race; six months and $600, sus
pended on service of two months
or $200 and three years probation.
Raymond P. Brewington, non
support; one year and $1,800, sus
pended on payment of $18 per
week and five years probation.
George Gary, larceny; one
year, suspended with three years
probation.

Committee To Work
With State Agency
The South Carolina Textile
Manufacturers Association today
named a committee of person
nel directors to work with the
South Carolina Program for
Technical Education.
The committee was authoriz
ed last week at the annual meet
ing of the Personnel Division of
the textile association at Hilton
Head Island after A. Wade Mar
tin, newly named director of the
South Carolina program, out
lined plans for the technical edu
cation program to the personnel
group

Lydia Cotton Mills, Clinton, and
chairman of the Personnel Divi
sion named the following com
mittee: Francis Bell, Springs
Cotton Mills, Fort Mill; J. M.
Fuller, W'oodside Mills, Green
ville; Dwight Frye, Mayfair
Mills, Spartanburg; W. H. Law-
son, Clearwater Finishing Com
pany, Clearwater; Noel E. Wil
liams, Columbia Pacific Mills,
Columbia; M. V. Wells, Green
wood Mills, Greenwood.
The committee will act as a
liaison body between the indus
trial education group and the
state's textile industry.
