Files $3,389 Claim

Grmnvilfc—A civil action suit
has been filed in U. S Western
District Court here by the Unit
ed States of America against the
Town of Laurens for judgment or
payment of $3,389. with interest,
involving an advance loan of
money for street improvements
in the town
The complaint in the civil suit
was signed by Joseph E. Hines,
U. S. Western District attorney,
and was filed July 13 A sum
mons and complaint in the case
was served by a U. S. deputy
marshal last Wednesday on May-

The defendant Town oi Laur
ens was allowed 20 days from
the date of service of the sum
mons and complaint to file an
answer Failure to do so will re
sult in a judgment by default,
the summons stated.
The complaint stated that the
Town of Laurens on Feb 4. 1946.
through its mayor, entered into
an agreement with the Federal
Works Agency B.ureau of Com
munity Facilities, an agency of
the United States of America,
wherein the federal agency con
tracted to advance to the town

preparation of plans for the con
struction of a public work de
scribed as “street improvements,
including bituminous surfacing,
storm dainage. curb, gutter and
sidewalks."
The complaint stated that the
defendant Town of Laurens
caused plans to be prepared by
Pickell & Picked, consulting en
gineers of Greenville, and as a
result thereof, the plaintiff agen
cy made advances to the defen
dant in the amount stated and
thereby performed all covenants
and conditions required of it
under the agreement
The complaint further stated
that the plaintiff, as far back as
May 14, 1957. made demand on
the defendant Town of Laurens
for repayment of the amount;
also that “the defendant has
failed and refused to pay any
portion of said indebtedness aft
er repeated demand therefor "

day in a veterans hospital in Ash
eville. N. C., were held in Elk
Park, N .C., Monday at 10:00 a
m Burial was at Friendship Bap
tist Church near Gray Court at
3:30 p m., Monday.
Grover Adair
Passes Suddenly
Word was received here yes
terday of the sudden death of
Grover Adair. 58. at his home in
Arlington. Va.
Mr. Adair, a native of this
section, has a number of rela
tives here He w as the son of the
late William P Adair and Mrs.
Ella Duckett Adair who now
lives in Chillum, Md. He is also
survived by his wife, N three
daughters and one son.

Participating in recovery op-
| erations for Air Force Captain.
Virgil 1 <Gus> Grissom, second
U S astronaut, were two navy
men from Clinton and Joanna.
They were William L Teague,
machinist's mate first class, son
of Mr. and Mrs C. O Teague of
Ht 1. and l.ewis W Crouch, sea
man. son of Mr and Mrs Wood
row W. Crouch of Joanna
Teague is serving aboard the
destroyer USS Sarsfield. and
Crouch is on the ocean mine-:
sweeper USS Exploit, both op-1
erating off the coast of Florida
The Navy recovery force, com
posed of both surface and air
units, was deployed down the
flight path from Ca|>e Canaveral
to the touchdown area northeast
of the Grand Bahamas Island,
and was prepared to recover the
spacecraft wherever it landed
Actual recovery was made by
a Marine Corps helicopter which
lifted Cfcpt Grissom out of the
water before the untimely sinking
of the “Liberty Bell 7 space
craft and transported him to the
deck of the aircraft carrier l SS
iiandolph. flagship of the down-
range recovery force headed by
Commander, Carrier Division 16
Cap! Grissom's spacecraft;
reached a sjieed of 5,310 mph, 400 i
mph faster than anticipated, and
traveled to a height of approxi-1
mately 623,404 feet before it
made its water landing 305 miles
off Cape Canaveral

Graydon, a representative to
the State I-egialature from Laur
ens County, has been In partner
ship with his brother, Haskel
Graydon, for a number of years
before buying his brother's share
of the store recently
The store is located on the old
Laurens-Clinton Highway at the
old Laurens Airport. The Gray
don brothers had operated the
store in partnership since 1957.
Rep Graydon said he was go
ing to devote his full time to the
operation of the business and
