Dr. Holman To Speak
Al College Friday
On Honors Program
Dr. C. Hugh Holman, noted
PC alumnus and former Clinton
1 resident who serves as head of
the University of North Carolina
English department, will deliver
the main addresses to highlight
Presoyterian College’s annual
Honors Day program this Fri
day.
He will speak to the student
body at 10 a. m; in Belk Audi-

talk at the Dean's List banquet
that evening.
The Friday morning program,
to which the general public is in
vited, will honor students of out
standing scholastic achievement
being tapped for membership in
two academic societies
Eight seniors have been select
ed for membership in Sigma
Kappa Alpha on the basis of
overall grade point averages
above 3.2 out of a possible 4.
They are: Edward D. Johnson
and Mrs. Grace Infinger Walker,
both of Clinton: Donald Kay of
Anderson: Harry G. McDonnold
of Asheville. N. C.; Miss Brenda
Gay Maddox of Spartanburg;
Mrs. Doris Nelson of Greenville;
Billy Ogden of Macon. Ga.; and
Maurice Schwartz of Laurin-
burg, N. C.

ters are: John Gettys of Union;
Miss Martha Ann Monroe of
Laurens; Robert Piephoff of
Greenville; and Miss Christine
Wilson of Monroe, N. C.
Dr. Holman, a 1936 graduate of
Presbyterian College who taught
here before spending ten years as
dean, has been on the North Car
olina faculty since 1949 and de
partment chairman since 1958.
He is recognized nationally as a
literary critic, especially in the
field of American literature, and
is the author of a number of
books and more than 50 articles
in leading jaurnals.
He recently revised and en
larged the classic Thrall and
Hibbard “A Handbook to Litera
ture,’’ served as co-author of
"The Development of American
Literary Criticism” and was a
contributing author to "The
Southerner as American.” The
PC alumnus, listed in “Who’s
Who in America,” currently is
working on a biography of Wil
liam Gilmore Simms.
Col. Barnett Goes
' To Leavenworth Post
COL. BARNETT
Lt. Col. W. W. Barnett, profes
sor of military science and tac
tics , at Presbyterian College for
the past four years, has received
orders to attend the Command
and General Staff College at Fort
Leavenworth. Kansas, next fall.
His tour of duty at PC will be
completed with the close of the
current session in June, and he
will report to the army school
on August 16.
The 18-week associate course
there, extending through mid
November, will deal with the
general field of command and
high-level staff planning.
Col. Barnett came to Presbyte
rian College in 1957 to assume di
rection of the Presbyterian Col
lege ROTC unit. Not only has he
work, but he and his wife have
been active In the religious and
civic life of Clinton. They expect
to leave the city around August
1 in preparation for the new as-
U. 8. Army officials have not
yet dlacloeed who will replace
Col. Barnett as of
the PC military battle group.
