selves comforts so that you could
have luxuries. This they have done
gladly, for you are their greatest
treasure Teen-agers, grow up and
go home!”
This pointed letter applies not on
ly to teen-agers, but also in part to
the many restless physical adults
who are afraid to be aJonp with
themselves and have to be enter
tained. T
» Sometime ago I read the follow
ing: ‘The trouble with the world
today is that there are too many
people in too many automobiles go-
ing in to many directions to no
where for nothing. ”
It is no wonder we are such a
restless people!
It is high time for us to make
some effort to restore the bome-
We go in debt to buy beautiful hous
es and then make out of them park
ing places at and cafeterias
in the day-time. Since the coming of
the automobile, boys and girls have
forgotten how to date at home, yet
it is the sofest place to do it.
Many parents don’t know how to
develop a famliy night at home.
There is a new book just out, "Fam
ily Night Fun,” by Monroe and
Shirley Paxman (Prentice Hall,
$3.95) which can be helpful to par
ents who want to establish or reac
tivate family nights at home. There
are other books in this field. Consid
ering the investment the average
family makes in the house which
they call home and judging by its
use. it is an expensive luxury The
best way to realize on that invest
ment is to use it—and use it as a
family.
. (EditorV Note: This is the first
in a Series of informative columns
on traveling through South Caro
lina. A former newspaperman, he
is a veteran of about 15 years in
news circles of the Carolinas, and
now serves as assistant executive
secretary of the Palmetto State Oil
Marketers’ .Association )
Going somewhere?
Oh. you say nowhere in particular,
but you want to get-away from the
house a few hours this week-end.
Well, there's northing like a ride
across the picturesque countryside
in the autumn.
Escape the tensions of the work
day. Get into the family car and
make that trip to Fantasyland,
South Carolina
May we suggest you "kill two
birds with one stone" and take a
motor trip to a beauty spot we re
cently visited in the upper reaches
of our state
First, of course, you must pre
pare for the trip. Pack some light
lundies. if you care, and take along
those car coarts because you’ll want
to get out and roam a little closer
to the heart of nature. And. of

course, be sure the auto is well ser
viced ami there's plenty of fuel.
Now we re off for a good day's
journey—and we underline GOOD.
I'm sure you will be glad you made
this trip
If you are situated in the west
ern part of the state, this may be
every-day stuff to you. And, then
again, perhaps you have driven to
and from work through a country
you've never really stoppad-te en
joy
Now , you who reside in the cen
tral or eastern sections, you’re in
for a real treat.
But, the time is limited! If you're
to get the full impact of nature’s
painted hillsides, you’d better go
soon. We have a few week-ends left
before winter’s fangs strike -end
traveling may become less inviting
Our rendezvous with this hardly
surpassable natural beauty will be
a few miles north of Greenville on
Highway 25. Of course, the scenes
enroute make this somewhat of an
anti-climax.
Nestled against a backdrop of
Blue Ridge mountains is a recently
formed lake which serves as a res
ervoir to Greenville area’s water
shed Be cautioned not to tarry
long, nor throw trash in the water
shed area
As you approach the lake, how
ever, there are places along the
way where you can stop and eat
lunch There are side roads to ex
plore also.
And if you are a true venturer,
you will drive to the top of the
range, where you come to the North
Carolina state line. Then return to
glimpse South Carolina scenes you
may never_ have realized were
there.
Now. if you want to stretch the
trip a little and perhaps plan to re
main overnight in a motel in the
Greenville area you may cross over
to the more western area of the
state and visit Caesar's Head,
Along this route, the trail is more
rugged but the grandeur is impres
sive. There are little mountain
streams, peaks jetting high and all
that goes into making for you a
thrilling exploration
Oh yes, you’ll not want to forget
to capture some of this with your
cameras. Color film can best re
cord it all and you can return to
your homeland equipped to be the
life of a party by showing some of
the slides, movies or still pictures.
It could be a once-in-a-lifetime
jaunt for you, so leave the cares be
hind, practice safety enroute, and
yours will be a delightful journey.

the place you want space is inside. We

outer size to give you extra inches of

inner space. Door openings are as
