More than 40 additional chargee
of forgery face Harold E Lawson.
39-year-old Clinton man. charged in
an initial warrant with eight counts
on connection with an alleged in
surance fraud. Sheriff C W Wier
said Monday
The first warrant was signed by
Albert H Nwestetn. field supervisor
of the State Insurance Commission,
and was sworn out before Magiv
trate Lucille Watts in Laurens
Lawson was released on 12.000
bond signed by his father. Victor
Lawson, and Roy L Sanders on
Oct 13
Sheriff Wier said that additional
warrants will be forthcoming after
conferences with Solicitor William
T. Jones
The sheriff said that Nines.rm re
ported that some $27,000 is involved
in the charges that could reach 50
in number.
The alleged frauds occurred
while Lawson was an agent for the
Durham Life Insurance Company,
the sheriff said He said that Law-
son would issue insurance policies,
using a fictitious name, and pay
the premiums himseK. At a later
date he would file a death claim,
froging a Clinton doctor’s name to
the deatr certificate, and collect
the claim
The sheriff said that names of
five Clinton doctors, and probably
one or two others in nearby com
munities. were forged on the death
certificates. Tile death claims rang
ed in amounts from $300 to $750.
Lawson resigned his job with the
insurance company some three
weeks prior to the forgery charges
He subsequently was employed by
Whitten Village, where he was ar
rested.
