One group of citizens, AMVETS, veterans
of World War II and Korea, have made thisj
self-examination the theme of their na
tional convention now underway in Miami
Beach. They are sitting down with a forum
of leading thinkers in various fields to dis-1
cuss the problems of our “National Purpose” i
and try to find some answers.
The fact that AMVETS—whose 125,000 ^

The most important question to me is how long
this 'gimme'’ political competition can continue |
Certainly this trend to the left I found M all countries
while traveling about Europe, However, it certainly
cannot last indefinitely; although I would not now pre
dict whether World War III would hasten it or delay
it. It may continue during the next two or three pre.-i-
dential campaigns, until all parties see that our coun
try is reaching a dangerous economic precipice. The
result may be the appointment of a dictator, or at
least a coalition government. Otherwise, we could be
headed toward some form of Communism. My grand
children feel that Russia may gradually move further
to the right with each generation while the United
States may go further to the left with each genera
tion. until the United Nations becomes a forceful or
ganization to remove the economic causes of war.
