SBA Can
Small Firms
In Expansion
While big business continue* to
quite often encounter* difficulty in
nhatining the type and amount of fi
nancial assistance he needs on
terms designed :o fit his particular
operation In reedgnition of the
plight of the nation’s .small business
community. Congress, in 1953. cre
ated the Small Business Administra
tion SBA is a federal agency with
the responsib.lity of providing fi
nancial and technical assistance to
worthy small concerns. Of the four
and one-half million business con
cerns in the nation. % per cent of
these have been classified as small
by SBA. There are 40.800 small busi
ness concerns m the state of South
Carolina. , *■—
According to Howard McKenzie,
Columbia Branch Manager, a retail
concern is small if its annual sales
volume does not exceed $1,000,000;
a wholesale firm with five million
dollars, or less, annual receipts is
small A manufacturing concern
may have from 250 to 1,000 employ
ees and be classified as small. In
addition to sales volume and num-
ber of employees, a small business
must be independently owned and
operated to be eligible for SBA~ as
sistance Mr McKenzie stated that
$BA is not in competition with
banks or other private lending in
stitutions aid will not grant a loan
if the needed funds are available
from private lending sources or
through utilization of personal re
sources. SBA loans can be used for
construction, expansion, conversion,
to increase inventories, for debt
payment and working capital. The
maximum loan is $350,000 and the
maturities cannot exceed 10 years.
The amount of loan and length of
maturity are governed by the bor-
rower’a needs and ability to repay
