Deaths Of Negroes
Are Ruled Suicides
Laurens — Two coroner’* juries I
Thursday ruled that two Negro
men, both of whom died recently!
of shotgun wounds, came to their
deaths at their own hands
The men were John B. Madden.
48, of Rt 1. Laurens; and WiRie
C. Smith, 50. of Laurns.
Two witnesses testified in the |
Madden case Deputy LeRoy Keeble
testified that he and Chief Deputy
Wesley Fowler went to the Madden
home at 4:00 p m on June 16 to
serve a bench warrant on the man
after he liad failed to appear in
court Deputy Keeble said that
Madden came to the door a* off!

said he'd go with the officers as
soon as he put his shoes on. DefMity
Keeble said The officer said they
hoard a noise after the man return
ed inside the house and when they
investigated they found Madden’s
body in the kitchen with a shot
gun lying beneath it.
In the Smith inquest, City Police
Capt. R N. Williams told of finding
Smith’s body on the bed at the
Smith home on June 7. A shotgun
and a walking cane were on the bed
beside the body. Officer Williams
said it was apparent that Smith
had placed the gun against his chest
and had used the cane to pulLthe
trigger.

To Join PC Staff
A new English instructor is join
ing the faculty Presbyterian Col
lege, Academic Dean George C:
Rellingrath announced today.
He is Donald Marvin Boyd, who
is srtieduled to assume his teaching
position with the start of the I960-
61 session in September He will
succeed Jack Durant, an instruc
tor leaving PC after the summer
session to resume work toward his
doctorate at the University of Ten
nessee
Boyd comes to Presbyterian Col
lege directly from Emory Univer
sity. where he is completing re
quirements for his master’s degree
I this summer. He received his bach
elor of arts degree in 1959 from Mc-
Murry College after compiling an
outstanding record as a student
there for four years.
The new PC professor is a native
of Stamford. Tex., and the son of a
Methodist minister.

met at the home of Mrs. Agnes
Kern, 302 E. Centennial Street on
Sunday for a reunion
Eighty-one members of the family
and several close friends were pres
ent The oldest member was Mrs.
.Agnes Kern, who is eight-nine; the
youngest, the month old son of Mr.
