who baked cakes for the cake auc
tion held at Clinton High School last
Thursday. The funds raised at the
auction will be used to finance the
junior-senior banquet held every
spring at the school.

elected to the student council in the
officers election held last week at
Clinton High School. Jane ik the

ams and is an eleventh grade stu
dent.
MEET WITH MRS. YOUNG
On Tuesday the women of Rock
Bridge Presbyterian Church met at
the home of Mrs. Frank Young.
Mrs. Grover Mclnvaille, circle

ing. Miss Viola Chandler gave an
interesting talk on ‘Birthday Ob
jectives." The offering taken at this
time was donated to Stillman Col

William Henry Belk’s great inter
est in prorpoting the Christian way
of life was deep-seated. It was from
forebears of deep religious feeling
that the Belk brothers came. They
were reared in a household where
Christian tenet* were strictly up-

From the very start of his church
membership, young Belk took a
j hand in the promotion of its work
| A devout member of the Presbyte
rian Church, he also aided many
churches of other denominations
Through the John M. Belk Mem
orial Fund he assisted more than
350 churches and manses in their
building programs. He was also in
terested in foreign missions and he
and Dr. Belk established a hospital
at Tai-Chow, China, known as the
"Sarah Walkup Belk Memorial Hos
pital" in honor of his mother. This
remarkable woman, the source of
much wise counsel and advice, lived
to be 96, her death occurring in
1932.
Today, Belk Chapel, a handsome
building on the campus of Queens
College, North Carolina, and the W.
H. Belk Dormitory at Davidson,
North Carolina, are performing use-; " ,U1

outstanding merchant. They and the
W. H. Belk Presbyteriah Church in
Anderson, South Carolina, were built
as permanent memorials in honor of

completion on the Presbyterian Col
lege campus, is yet another mem
orial to this Southern merchant.
