Aid For Athletes
Presbyterian College trustees
l.ave adopted a matching “dollar
for dollar” policy to finance schol
arship aid to qualified athletes, it
was announced today.
\kimni and other friends of inter-
collegiate sports at PC are asked to
provide one-half of the scholarship
cost through annual gifts to the
Walter Johnson Club
. Mounting deficits in the athletic
program were cited as the reason
for this move taken by the Presby
terian College board of trustees at
it' recent spring meeting. Action
came upon recommendation of a
special trustee committee which has
studied the situation for the past
year
The report pointed out that, to
continue the sports program at its
present level at PC. it would be
necessary for supporters to mist'

can be met, but efforts will be re
viewed annually, by the trustees

Furman E Ott. Laurens heating
and air conditioning contractor, was
elected chairman of the Laurens
County Republican Committee at a
meeting held Mnrch 7 at the Laur
ens County court house.
Mr. Ott has lived in Laurens for
the past 20 y ears. A veteran of
World War II. he is married to the
former Mildred Stewart, of Clinton,
and is the father of foitf children.
In accepting the chairYnanship of
the Republican Party in Laurens
County. Mr Ott made the follow
ing statement: "I feel it is an honor
and a privilege, and 1 w ill carry out
the duties of this office to the best
of my ability. It is especially im
portant for all young people to study
the records and aims of both par
ties before becoming affiliated with
either party.
“I urge all persons who are in
terested in the continued peace and
prosperity of this' country to give
careful consideration to the Repub
lican Party. It offers great oppor
tunity to young people, particularly
in the South." Mr. Ott declared
