Laurens Physician Named
On County Hospital Board
Laurens — The Laurens County
legislative delegation Wedneaday
i named a doctor to the county hos
pital board of trustees.
With this action, the delegation
apparently cured the ills which had
plagued the hospital here for many
weeks during which time the trus
tees and medical staff were at odds.
But the action drew immediate
criticism from Marcus Boyd, chair
man of the hospital board of trus
tees, who said he had not been con-
4 suited about the appointment.
“It is a bombshell to me,” he
said Wednesday night. ‘‘It was ex
actly opposite of what I had been
led to believe. It was a double-cross
on the part of the delegation.”
Approved for the post on the 14-
mah board was Dr. Julian Atkinson,
who will be the first medical staff
member of the group. „
He will fill a vacancy created
by the recent resignation of T. C.
Owings.
The place on the board represent
ed a partial fulfillment of the de
mands and complaints issued by the
doctors about administrative pro
cedures at the hospital.

doctors had been a five man trustee
board, with medical staff represen
tation. They had Also asked for
more trained personnel and better
administrative procedures, among
other things.
Chief of Staff Dr. M. B Nickles
said that ‘it was the belief of the
staff that the action taken by the
delegation should lead to better cir
cumstances at the hospital and
should result in providing the cit
izens a “bitter facility.” •
In his statement, he said that the
doctors had postponed from Oct. 1.
putting into action a resolution
which would have halted treatment
of charity work pending outcome
of a compromise over problems.
Six of the doctors, irritated by
certain procedures and actions, pub
licly declared they would on Oct.
18 begin operating at the hospital
as a “courtesy staff, treating only
their own and private charity pa
tients. Later this was modified so
there would be care for emergency
cases.
Trustees countered by request
ing the doctors to resign formally
if that was their desire, but warned
that once they had done so only trus
tee action could re-admit them to
the staff.
The trustees officially declined to
recognize the courtesy'* plan. Pre-
surfiably it never went fully into ef
fect.
Earlier last week, the doctors
apiminted two of their number to
form a committee which will work
in liaison with a similar group from
the trustee board.
Their job will be to meet before
each quarterly trustee meet, and of-
tener if necessary, to iron out and
air out any foreseen difficulties and
problems. The delegation proposed
this plan several days ago
