Last Run tor Old No. 301
Clinton residents Tuesday afternoon saw what probably will be
the last steam locomotive to operate on the Seaboard Railroad when
old No. 301 came through on its way lo Charlotte, N. C., where it will
be retained as a museum piece.
The engine last served the Gainesville (Ga.) Midland road, now
the property of the Seaboard.
An Abbeville crew brought the old engine through Clinton to Mon
roe. N. C. H. O. Price was engineer; T. A. Shumate, fireman, and
E. R. Southard, conductor.
R. J. Keith, foreman of engineers of Seaboard, also took the trip.
For much of the way the engine was followed by a section foreman's
car, which had the taA of putting out fires, started from embers
falling out of a faulty ash pan. akag the right of way.
The locomotive took on water through a fire hose at the Clinton
water plant adjoining the tracks and also made a stop at the Broad
Street crossing in the middle of town. Crowds of local residents took
a last look at the locomotive at both stops. The above view was made
at the water piaat.
The engine was originally owaed by the Seaboard as No 930. and
later sold to Gainesville Midland.—Photo by Dan Yarborough.
