Flies do a great deal of damage
to cattle in summer months. They
can be controlled by no more than
one hour of work. Back rubbers
will do the* 1 trick. All you need is
two posts set about 10 to 12 feet
iA>art, a chain swinging between
the posts wrapped with sacks, and
the sacks soaked with Methozychlor,
DDT or Toxaphene. Hie insecticide
should be mixed with fuel oil and
applied to the sacks every two or
three weeks. Hus rig should not
be used for milking cows, but can
be used for beef cattle and dairy

DAIRYMEN VISIT OHIO
I had the pleasure of visiting the
Northern Ohio bull stud with a
group of Laurens County dairymen
last week. On the trip were James
Jacks, Serviceman; Ed Copeland,
L. F. Davis and Caldwell Henderson.
Theso men wanted to see the bulla
they had been using and also
some of their daughters. Hie general
feeling among the H'OUP was that
the bulls were better than they had
expected, and that Max Drake,
Manager, and his staff were the
most aggressive men they had
talked with in reference to improv
ing dairy cattle. Our boys were
interested in how the Ohio dairymen
grew out such large heifers.
Every farmer we visited said he
didn't let his heifers out of the
barn until they were a year old.
This was unusual, judging from our
method. I would not say that keeping
the calf in for a year would be
the thing for South CaroUna farmers,
but I do know the calf should be
kept up until his digestive system
has developed to a point where he
can utilize grass. Too many -of
our farmers turn calves out and

Fountain Inn—An afternoon of ar
guments and threats ended in death
here Saturday for a 35-year-old
Fountain Inn Negro, Laurens County
Sheriff C. W. Wier said /
William (Bill) Wharton, a .22 cal
iber bullet in his back, staggered
into a grocery store near here and
dropped dead.
Outaode, two Negro brothers hdd
22 caliber weapons, the sheriff said
witnesses told him.
The brothers, Sammie Lee Mc
Gowan, 25 of Greensboro. N. C.,
and Luther McGowan, 17, of Lau
rens County, were arrested at their
father’s home a few hours after the
9:90 p m. shooting.

were called^, but the aneats were
made before the dap could be em
ployed
The Negro brothers are being held
in the Laurens County Jail pending
further investigation, the sheriff
