Danny Lewis underwent an ap pendectomy at Joanna hospital last \\ edm-sday Jodie Galloway of Trenton is a medical patient at Joanna hospital Mrs. Kathleen Holsonback has returned to her home after under going surgery on Thursday at the local hospital Connie Prater is receiving treat ment at the local hospital J. S Prater is recuperating at his home following a tonsilectomy on Friday Martha Ellen Abrams underwent a lunsilectomy on Saturday at the Joanna hospital Peggy Hayes is convalescing at her home following a tonsil opera tion on Saturday Friends will be interested to know that George Lehman is a patient at t ie VA hospital in Whipple. Ari- 100a CHRISTMAS PARTY James Evans was host to the .vurfceft on his section of No. 2 spinning room with a chicken stew at the Shady Grove Community Center on Friday evening. The dining room was festive , with Christmas decorations. Following supper Mrs. Louise Salters had charge of the games. Several amus ing games and contests were enjoy ed by the 50 co-workers and guests. Mrs. James Sloan accompanied the group in singing Christmas carols. Mr. Sloan took pictures during the evening. Later gifts were exchang ed beside the beautiful tree. Special guests for the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Mason Rowland, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Boyce, Mr. and Mrs. James Sloan. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS KELLEY Mr. and Mrs. Olin Kenneth KeL ley announce the birth of a daugh ter, Kimberly Jayne, on December 15 at Blalock Clinic. BENNETT Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bennett an nounce the birth of a daughter on December 21. Mrs. Bennett is the former Miss Lillie Belle' Crawford of Clinton. INTERMEDIATES HAVE PARTY The first Intermediate class of Epworth Methodist Church enjoyed a Christmas party at the home of their teacher, Mrs. Ruth Cobb, on Friday evening. Each of the girls had a game planned for all to play.,There was eight members present. The Cobb home was decorated in keeping with the season. The giris exchanged gifts beside the tree. Mrs. Cobb served hot dogs, chips, mints, cookies and cold drinks ATTEND BANQUET Mr. and Mrs. H G. Murrah, Jr., Mr and Mrs Johnny Moore, Mr. and Mrs Charlie Force, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Lee Swygert, Mr. and Mrs Julian Hunnicutt, Mr. and Mrs W. W. Niver, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Banks, Mr and Mrs. Har old Russell. Mr and Mrs. Alvin Marshall attended the annual Blue Ridge Council banquet at the Clem- •‘on House Saturday evening W. ERCIE BROWN PASSES W. Ercie Brown. 61, died at an early hour Saturday at the Joanna hospital after a year of declining health. He wa.- a native of Georgia, but had made his home in Joanna for the past 30 years He was a son of Mrs. Bertie P Brown and the late Tom Brown He was a mem ber of Epworth Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Canoe H Brown; three sons. T. W Brown of Clinton; Mack L Brown and James L Brown of Jo anna. his mother of Roystoo, Ga.; six grandchildren, four brothers, Plumer Brown and George Brown of Royaton. Ga ; Luther Brown of Hartwell, Ga.; and Henry W. Brown of Columbia; two sisters. Mrs Nellie Fowler of Royston, Ga., and Mrs. Minnie Hilley of Lavo- nia, Ga. Funeral services were held Sun day at 3:00 p. m. at Epworth Meth odist Church, conducted by the Rev. Nathan Flemming, the Rev. James B. Mitchell, the Rev. J. W. Spillers and the Rev. James A. Grigsby. Burial was in Rosemont cemetery, Clinton. Pallbearers were Frank Phillips, Roy Russ, Ralph Prater, Louie Na bors, Jack Roebuck, and Earl Si neath. t The honorary escort was com posed of the Board of Stewards of Epworth Methodist Church, the Men’s Bible Class, Joe Delany, Dr. D. H. McFadden, Cecil Bishop, E. J. Willingham and E. C. Chapman. DR. T. LAYTON FRASER . . . THE HOLY LAND Article Ne. 14 Dr. Fraser. Professor of Bibl^ at Presbyterian College, recently returned from a trip to Europe and the Middle Eeast. After a strenuous morning within the walls of the old city of Jerusa lem, a little rest was in order. After this, another member of the party and I, who wanted to return to the Mount of Olives before leaving Jerusalem, did so and ran into a young man of Moslem faith who took an interest in us. I had just taken a picture of a large group of little boys with a priest who seemed to have been on a hike on the moun tain. They had just crossed the Kedron Y’alley on their way up to the city They were very coopera-' live—even more so than I wsihed— for I wanted to get them as they walked along, but they gathered into a group when I asked permis sion to take their picture. It is cer tainly fortunate for us that many people in other countries under stand English, for we ignorant Americans are usually able to con verse only in our mother tongue. The young Moslem, who was on his way home, asked us to go along, so we made our way with him to the top of the Mount of Olives. We followed the old Roman road over the mountain, that is thought surely to be the one over which Jesus made his triumphal entry into Je rusalem. It is there that the pro cession comes each Palm Sunday, commemorating the event It is an unusual mountain road, for, instead of circling and going up gradually, it goes almost straight over the top. You will remember that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem to the Feast of the Passover, and arriving at Bethany and Bethpage from the di rection of Jericho, he sent two of his disciples on ahead with instruc tions that they would find the colt of a donkey tied. They were to bring him to Jesus that he might ride into the city. Bethpage is just over the crest of the mountain from Jerusalem As Jesus rode along. the people spread their garments in the road before Him, and the multi tude of disciples rejoiced and prais ed God for the mighty works that they had seen. From this road there is a Vvonder ful view of Jerusalem, and one can know the approximate place where Jesus saw the city and wept over it, saying, “Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. For the days shall come upon! you, when your enemies will cast up a bank about you and sur round you, and hem you in on ev ery side, and dash you to the ground, you and your children with in you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation.:’ (Luke 19:42-44), Would that the nations of the world today knew the things that make for peace.’’ The young man. who was guiding us insisted that we come to his home and have coffee, so we did. We were disappointed that his fa ther and mother were not in, but his sister was. She could not un derstand English, but she could make coffee much better than some I tasted. She whs soon to be mar ried, and her borther persuaded her to show us the dresses she had made. They were wonderfully made —eome with “Crusader" embroi dery. They had all lived in Tel Aviv, on the Mediterranean, until the war with Israel in 1941 Then they moved to this little stone, one room, home on top of the Mount of Olives. It was exceedingly clean and neat, with mattresses and bed clothing stacked in a nook made for the purpose, but I saw no means of beating or cooking except the one litle burner over which the coffee was made. It was growing late, and even though the visit was interesting and pleasant, it became a little dificult to leave gracefully, but finally it was done, and our friend Hmed Fhsan Esyad, called for a taxi over the village phone, and we were soon back at our hotel.
