Shift Gears For
Basketball Season
Basketball picks up the sports
pace from football without missing
a bounce at Presbyterian College
as the Blue Hose open at Furman
tonight (Thursday).
They return for their first home
game against the strong Citadel
Biillodgs this Saturday evening
Game time is 8:00 p m in Leroy
Springs gymnasium
Although four of the five starters
art* back from last year's squad,
Coach Courts Bedford points to
some very real problems in giving
a general preview of his squad
today Lack of height, inadequate
depth and inexperienced pivot can
didates will make the 1957-58 record
of 16 wine and 8 losses difficult to
match. In addition. Bedford feels
all opponents are improved this
year
Presbyterian is expected to put a
hustling quintet on the floor The
Hosemen hope to make up for short
stature with speed, tight defense and
sharp shooting.
Starting forwards Balph Cham
bers of Chicago, and Bob Stratton
of Lawrenceburg, Ky., are back
after sparking the attack last year.
Team captain .Chambers set the
pace w ith 409 total points and a 17
points per game average, while
Stratton followed closely with 400
and a 16.5 average.
The guard positions are in the
capable hands of two senior spark
plugs who combine set shot pro
ficiency with talented floor work
and ball handling They are tfi"n
Caswell of Paris, Ky,, who averag
ed 14 points each game last season,
and Bill Sullivan, of Frankfort.
Ind., a 13.3 average scorer who also
added 6 assists per contest. Sullivan
serves as co-captaip again this sea
son
Center poses the big problem
Coach Bedford is hard pressed to
replace the shoes filled alternately
by the now graduated Wyatt Aikee
of Greenville, and Clayton Adams
of Philadelphia, the only two letter-
men lost from last year The pivot
mantle likely will fall on Sonny
Wells, a senior from Summerton,
or Mickey Long of Greenville.
Wells has the necessary height, but
both lack experience.

thern Bell Telephone Company with
