Three Underpasses
In Clinton Section
Bids will be received September
16 by the State Highway Depart
ment on three underpasses in Laur
ens County, all of them near Clin-
I ton.
Included are two on Interstate
Highway 26 and one on U. S. Route
276

presented a showing of all fashions
Wednesday afternoon, August 27, at
the Hotel Mary Musgrove ballroom.
A feature of the afternoon was a
trunk showing of a new line of
dresses and sportswear with a com
pany representative giving the com
mentary on color highlights and
styling of a number of dresses
which were modeled.

1958 football season Friday night
when the Red Devils meet York at
8 o'clock on Presbyterian College’s
Johnson Field
The local gridders take to the
field after a three-week practice
session that began on August 15.
Coach Ralph •'Buzz" Tedards,
when questioned about prospects for
the season, would not admit that
his team was “ready to go,” and
was not entirely pessimistic. He
said he had some good boys on the
squad who could handle their posi
tions adequately, but he just did
not have enough of them
“Lack of reserves will hurt us,”
he said, especially in the line and at
end. “Some of the boys will have to
play 60 minute football.” he declar
ed.
“We lost about 15 players by
graduation—some of our best per
formers—and that hurt. Many of
our boys are youngsters not yet
ready for high school football.
“Therefore we will have to con
tend with lack of experience at
many position^. But with game ex
perience, I look for several excel
lent performers to emerge.
“I have been impressed with the
attitude and hustle shown by the
team, and in most cases the boys
have been giving their best.” Ted
ards said.
Practice scrimmages have been
held against teams from Warren-
ton, Ga., Honea Path, Woodruff,
and Greenville High.

$1,247,424 Benefits
Being Paid Annually
To County Residents
Old age, survivors, and disability
insurance benefits are being paid
in Laurens County at the rate of
$1,247,424 a year, according to Miss
Martha Pressly, manager of the
Greenwood Social Security district
office.
“This is an increase of about
31% over last year,” Miss Pressly
said.
“Our studies have shown that
many of these aged people, widows,
and orphans have little or no other
resources,” she pointed out. “For
something like 9%, social security
benefits, received as an earned
right, are the only cash income.”
Miss Pressly also stressed that
while the benefits are intended pri-
marliy as basis for individual eco
nomic security, the payment of so

“There were several reasons for
the- increase in benefits over last
year,” Miss Pressly said. One was
the payment of benefits to people
who were brought under the law
for the first time in recent years—
self-employed farmers, for exam
ple. Other reasons for the increase
were the reduction in the retire
ment age to 62 for women and the
starting of disability insurance ben
efits to disabled people 50 or over.
Miss Pressly agreed that one fac
tor in the increase may be the bus
iness recession. “I’m sure some
older people who would have pre
ferred to keep on working have
been forced to retire because of the
general business condition,” Mias
Pressly said.
