IS miles out on Whitmire highway Call 424 W or *er Ranald Pace Ip (From Newberry Observer) The Clinton-Newberr Natural Gas Authority lost $1,670 “In potential revenue" during the past fiscal year, according - to an annual audit of the authority prepared by C. Walter Summer, CPA. Explaining the loss. Summer states in his comments on the au dit: "It is the policy of the authority to enforce a penalty of 10 percent on all bills not paid by the 10th of the month. Unless paid by the 15th, service will be discontinued until all arrears are paid with $5.00 ad ditional for cutting on. "There were approximately $5,- 600 of accounts paid after the 12th of the month on which no penalties were charged. Alsd, there were 222 instances in which no cut on fees were charged on bills paid after hte 17th of the month. In 15 instan ces cut on fees were charged at amounts varying from $1.00 to $3.00. Since this represents a' loss of $1,670 in potential revenue we recomend that the aforesaid policy of the authority be strictly adhered to.” ^ It was pointed out in the report that at a meeting of February 28, 1954, the authority ‘adopted the policy that it would not handle any domestic appliances. In several in stances records indicate that ap pliances were bought and sold to other than authority members at cost or slightly above.” Concerning employees, the audit I pointed out that “during the period under examination a total of 573 hours overtime was recorded as having been worked by hourly paid employees. Since this represents a sizeable expenditure it is suggested that the policy of the authority in 1 regard to overtime be reviewed." j The audit reported that “the au- I thority had initiated certain steps toward an improvement in the fi nancial and accounting system and various forms were obtained, if: < properly used, would provide for a more effective control over ma terial and labor ” It further stated that 'during this examination, w e were informed that no work orders were maintain ed on capital improvements, there- I fore we could not capitalize any of the interna) material and labor used in the construction of additions and ' improvements to the transmission I and distribution systeQi '* The report cons its of seven ex hibits and four schedules Exhibit Q shows that the income of the authority was $163,790.44 as compared with $475,515.70 for the previous year or an increase of $138,274.74. The net profit after debt service was $82,550.17, or an increase of $28,428 54 over the previous pe riod. ' Balance of revenue bonds still owing through June 1, 1982, totals $2,750,000.00. Alfred D. Dorroh Alfred Ross Dorroh, 89, died Sun day afternoon at the Presbyterian Home in Summerville. A Laurens County native, he was reared in Greenville, but had spent most of his life in Washington, D. C. He was a son of the late Dr. John Francis-and Elizabeth Saxon Dor roh. His wife died in Washington five years ago. Funeral ^services were conducted Monday at the Presbyterian Home in Summerville by the Rev. Tapps, superintendent of the home. Burial was in Washington, D. C. prices If he does, he doesn’t think much of his herd of cattle. There are several good bulls in the county going to butcher if they are not moved in the near future. These bulls have calves to their side. The best way to tell what a bull is worth is to look at his calves. We suggest that you fellows who need bulls to try to locate what you want before it is to late, then you must take what you can get. FERTIUZE SHRUBS Most peole will use fertilizer in the. fall around their shade trees and shrubs, and then again in the spring, or when the mood strikes. Fall fertilization seems to stimulate growth, then the cold winter comes along and more damage is done than if they had not been fertilized at all. It might be wise to lighten up on fertilizer until early spring. COTTON INSECTS This past week I found a number of grown bolls that had been punc tured by the boll worm. Once the boll has been punctured water comes in and the boll will rot. Take a good look at your cotton field to day and see what damage is being done by the boll worm and boll News From The County Agent M. L. OUTZ, County Agent GOOD BULLS SCARCE Good bulls are always hard to find. Most breeders are castrating more these days than ever before. You cannot blame them, the way the steer market has been running the past few seasons. But the old saying still holds true, "the bull is half the herd.” A farmer should not expect to buy a bull for meat weevil. Laurens County cotton is big, late and has a tot W fruit on it. Don’t be afraid to dust LAURENS COUNTY FAIR The Laurens County fair will be sponsored this year by the Laurens Exchange club during the week of Octboer 20-25. GUERNSEY CATTLE SALES Three Guernsey Cattle Sales have been scheduled for August 19, 20 and 21. The sales will be held at Chester, Denmark and Columbia. Garden Tips Plant a fall vegetable garden now for better farm living and health. Every family should plant turnips and other greens for fall and early winter use. Clean up ground where vegetables have matured to lessen insects and disease damage nexr season. Conserve high quality fruit and vegetables for winter by freez ing and canning.
