FARMS...
AND FOLKS

FARMS FEWER, LARGER,
AND MORE OWNERS
Our farms in South Carolina are
sort of following the national pat
tern.
They are fewer in number, larger
in size,'and more of ’em farmed
by owners.
According to the Census, in 1920
we had 192,693 farms In 1954 that
had, shrunk to 124,203. In 1920 the
average size was 64.5 acres. By
1954 that had grown to 89.1. And in
1920 64.5 per cent of ’em were farm
ed by tenants. But this had dropped
to 39.3 per cent in 1954. That’s one
case where a lower figure means
progress. ^
This is a substantial increase in
farm owners. A number of things
account for this, the principal one
of which is undoubtedly the Farm
ers Home Administration. I’ve
watched this organization from the
start, under the several names
which it has operated. At first it
was a bit hay-wire and impractical.
But it soon got its feet on the ground
and has been a real help and guid
ance in steering many a tenant into
farm ownership. It does not give
the farmer anything except a lot
of wise guidance. It loans him the
money on what looks like a good
bet. Then it helps him plan and pro
duce to make a go of it. And hun
dreds have, paid out in full, and
now own and operate farms. Its of
ficials work closely withClemson.
Credit and guidance suited to
farm needs, that’s what the FHA
specializes in. And it has thus help
ed to make a lot of farm owners
in our midst.

IRRIGATED CORN
Irrigated corn at Clemson last
year made 117 bushels per acre.
That not irrigated right by it made
only 12 bushels And. remember,
that was not a specially dry year,
just July was. It was trying to
make then, and popped a cap.
It's so often that way here We
have a lot of rain on a yearly basis,
but those 6 droughts a year we
average come along, hit crops at
critical timet, and often knock them
for a loop Supplementary irrigation
at those times often means the dif
ference between success and fail

ing rheumatic fever and artirhtis.
USING LOGS
Our foresters tell me only about
half of the average log goes into
lumber. About a fourth goes into
sawdust. And the other fourth is
slabs and bark.
For years we used only the half
that went into lumber. Now of late
I see them debarking the slabs and
chipping them up for pulp at places
That leaves only the bark and saw
dust unused. And at a few places
over the country the sawdust is be
ing compressed into small logs for
firewood. Now that leaves only the
bark unused. Maybe time will see
it go into plywood, insulation, or
something alse useful.
We use less wood of all sorts per
capita than we once did- But the
nation is growing fast and the total
needs for wood will likely increase.
Once our forests were being de
pleted fast. But npw science is being
applied to the woodlands, too. And
our forester, Bill Barker,- tells me
we are growing wood faster than
we are using it.
Trees once had to look out for
themselves. We cut ’em with wan
ton axe, and set fire to what was
left. Not so now! We protect them
from fire. Out state grows the seed
lings by the mililons. The county
agents tell me they have taken or
ders for more than will be grown.
They teach 4-H youngsters and
farmers how to set them out and
care for them. And trees are com
ing back to thousands of their lost
acres.

BOYS ARE THAT WAY
My most desperate times as a kid
in the Stone Hills of the Dutch Fork
were with toothache We really had
it. for there uas little dental care
then The only tooth brushes we
had were fresh sassafras twigs with
frayed ends that wasn't good And
used them rather seldom
The nearest dentist was in Co
lumbia. 20 miles away. And that
was a tourney then We feared
that dentist almost as death itself,
for there was little paialesMieas then
ia their teehmque So we shunned
them until the very last, never gw
mg until the hurtm’ started ■
rather quick, as the strong and poi
sonous acid penetrated the nerve
that was exposed and hurtin, But
occasionally the hurtin' nerve must
not have been exposed, for the
tooth would fail to stop its throb
bing. It was then we bound up our
head with a scarf and lit out for Co
lumbia.
That crude dental chair, with foot
operated drill, was a torture spot
for me. I dreaded it as nothing else
in life, before or after. And I ap
proached that office as a lamb to
the slaughter.
I remember once sitting in that
seat of horror on a spring day and
noticing a squirrel cavorting in a
large oak tree across the street.
How I envied him. No toothache,
no dentist. Surely his life must be a
veritable bed of roses. Then the
fearsome drilling started again.
And if there was a hot spot in that
tooth, it seemed the^»(an would find
it every time and dwell right there,
on and on.
Eventually the dentist would fin
ish and let me up. That wa sa great
moment, and life immediately took
on a rosy hue. I’d go right down on
the street, take my nickle and get
me a bag of that divine peanut can
dy from Fagan’s candy store. Can
dy was a thing I had avoided for
some timp, knowing it would bring
on the above ordeal. But then there
was no inhibition. I lit into that
fresh-made peanut brittle, as only
the Fagans could make it. And I
left superior to everyone I met on
the street, for I had a longer re
prieve from th dental chair than
those I passed, for I was just from
there, and my mouth was OK,
whereas they probably needed to
go then. More of this next wek.

REMEMBER THIS ONE? A lot of our young people
may be humming it as June brings their wedding day
closer. If you’d like to “ring a bell” with a gift that’s really
different, send the happy couple an extension phone in
color to match their new apartment or home! We have
nine decorator shades to choose from. It’s the ideal gift be
cause it’s inexpensive as well as good-looking and practical.
TIPS TO HUBBY: Just a little reminder that last June’s
bride is this year’s anniversary girl. Surprise her with a
lovely extension phone,... have a new “bell” ringing for
you and your gal.
