Th«r«4n. Junr ft. IfSM THE CLINTON CHtONin * r«c« NiM FARMS... AND FOLKS. By J. M. ELEAZER CJemNon Collefc Information SpcdaUat ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ PRODUCTION CREDIT ASSOCIATIONS On a cold and blustery day in January, 1934, a young man came into my county agent office in Sum ter talking a language I liked. His name was Frank Towles, and he told of a possible way of getting some farm credit. Credit had com pletely dried up and the farm out look was bleak. We called a few' leaders in the next day and he outlined how they could form a production credit as sociation. If they met certain re quirements, the government would take some stock in it to get it start- ed. Well, our area and hundreds of others over this broad land took ad vantage of that. And there the Sum ter Production Credit Association was formed. Under farmer man agement, it has performed a great service there, paid back every gov ernment dollar, is now entirely farmer owned, has a sizable surplus on hand, and is still serving its members , And, folks, that's pretty well the history of the 497 Production Credit Associations that cover the United States. Their combined net worth is now well over $200 million, and less than $2 million is still owed the government. In the Columbia District there are 87 Associations, the largest in the country. Every one of these has paid the govbrnment out and is now entirely member owned. Quite ai record for our associations and those in the Columbia office who work with them! It has been said that self help is the best sort. And that is just what these farmers have done, ever since the government gave them that lit tle lift back yonder in the dark of the mid thirties. They have paid every cent of that back, with in terest. And now are better masters cOmR got it!" NEW ft thru ova destiny with credit M tbetr own hands, credit tailored to thetP needs * • • • SOYBEANS Soybeans are growing into a giant crop in this country. Last year 80 per cent of those entering world trade came from this country, rep resenting 17 per rent of our crop. Our country is the world’s great est exporter of farm products. Last year it furnished 22 per cent of such products entering world trade. Soybean planting time hefe has arrived again. This year CTemson is recommending the Jackson, Lee. CNS4, and JEW 45 for oil. For hay it is the Ottotan. And for sliage and grazing, the Biloxi. Some haven't been fertilizing their beans, just using them as a catch-crop after grain. But Clem- son warns that beans are rather heavy feeders, specially on min erals. If inoculated, they can get anost of their nitrogen from the soil. For average soils, 400-600 pounds of 4-12-12 are recommended. B u t where there is a reserve of phos phate in the soil and potash is low, the formula recommended is 3-918 * ♦ * COTTON NOW Last_yeiir .Kern County, Califor nia, produced 447,648 bales of cot ton. The whole state of South Caro lina produced only 346,557 bales. And Fresno County out there tnade more than our whole state did, too. They came up with 387,850 bales. They don’t grow cotton every where, like we have been accus tomed to There are just a few lit tle dots on the map of that state that show where cotton is now grown Yet. they come up with such a prodigious production, that state is now only second to Texas in cot ton production in this country There are endless miles of dry un developed lands out there awaiting but water and leveling to make as fine cotton as those acres on which they now grow it And the same is true in Arizona and New Mexico. We have some areas in our state that would grow more cotton if per- suited But they have been cut down with the rest in recent years Looks like the Sumter Idee pre sealed by Cemty Agent Bowen at the Stale Cotton Council meeting m Columbia hark » the winter has merit It veuM perms rowlii s rather >11 imted to m to rent tbetr the thrifty Dutch ed em se rlooe they carried little substance We made something from apples, canned or fresh. I don't see any more Apple float, we railed R. You whipped the stewed product until it got light and fluffy, like whipped cream Thu was then eat en as a dessert with milk, to which nutmeg and sugar had been added. A light dessert, and a good one, loo. From the dried apples we made fried pies. They, with a lit ft sy rup, were good eatin’ And, I'll bet, still would be. if you could get ahold of 'em.
