Above is shown th metal p:alc that was replaced Sunday on the granite marker commemorating the
Battle of Musgrwe’s Mill in the Revolutionary War. The monument is located at the Laurens County end
of the bridge over F.norec River on the highway fro.n Clinton to Spartanburg. The battle area extended
oo bc ih sides of the river, between American and R itish forces, being a prelude- to the Battle of Kings
MoJ..uiin in North Carolina.
A former plate attached to the stone was removed by vandals several years ago. Instrumental in re
placing the plate were the Mary Mus grove Chapter, DAR, of Woodruff; and the Kate Barry Chapter,
DAR, of Spartanburg. The original plate and the stone were moved from a former site near the entrance
to the old bridge at the Musgrove’s Mill site and old Musgrove home which is still standing, being owned
by Thornwell Orphanage. The original plate and marker were erected by the Musgrove’s Mill Chapter,
DAR, of Clinton, about 45 years ago.
Shown at the ceremonies Sunday afternoon are, left to right: Mrs. Paul Foster, regent, Kate Barry
Chapter, Spartanburg; Mrs. H. A. Lamb, past rege.it, Mary Musgrove Chapter, F.noree; and Mrs. D. L.
Stoddard, past state historian, Spartanburg. —Photo by Dan Yarborough.
