Conservation
Notes
By J. B. O'DELL
Paul Owings, manager of the
Ross Templeton beef cattle farm at
Owings, was applynig 0-14-14 ferti
lizer to sericea last week.. He was
putting down around 500 pounds per
acre on 22 acres of sericea that was
established about five years ago as
part of hi* district soil and water
conservation plan on the farm. Mr.
Owings said, “Sericea is often re
ferred to as a poor-land crop, but
it will respond to fertilizer just the
same as any other crop. The cows
grazing sericea can tell, too, when it
has been fertilized.” The palatabil-
ity of sericea is much improved by
fertilization This may account for
some of the earlier unfavorable re
ports that cows would not graze it.
Animals turned in on unfertilized
sericea grown on poor land will re
act much as they do to any 6ther
unfertilized pasture grown on poor
land
Mr Owings was also making
plans to plant 30 acres of coastal
berrmida grass during the last of
this month He said, “I haven't de
cided yet whether to broadcast it
or use the Bermuda planter. 1 have
tried both methods and have gotten
good stands of grass each way.” He
plans to use a pre-emergence spray
at the time of planting to control
crab grass TTiis will be followed
with a spray of 2,4-D within four
to six weeks to control the weeds
The control of grass and weeds is
\very important in the establishment
of coastal berrmida. Mr. Owings al
ready has a beautiful 20-acre field
of coastal berrmida that was plant- i
ed in 1955 U is doing an excellent
job of tying down the soil and fur
nishing ‘he best of grazing for a
held of beef cattle

Furman Ott, of Laurens, a Dis
trict cooperator who owns a beef
cattle farm six miles South of Lau
rens, has found that keeping a good
cover of grass on pastures and the
rotation of grazing has paid off this j
winter.* He says “you fellows of
the Soil Conservation Service sure
toM me right when you said get a
cover on my land instead of ter
racing it " His grazing is sericea
over-seeded with crimson clover
and rye grass, and jNo two pas-
i
lures of small grain. He is careful'
not to over-graze his pastures and*
rotates his cows from field to field
to avoid doing this When we had
those big rains awhile back, my
land did not wash as much as some
fields I see in the county that are
bare and terraced. It takes more
than terraces to hold land when
you have that kind of rain. '’ he com
mented He will leave the natural :
draws and drainage ways in grass
when he piows his land for reseed
ing This keeps down erosion by hav
ing an established sod waterway at
all times
Last year he built a stock water
ing pond in one pasture This spring
he has scheduled the building of an
irrigation pond which he plans to
use for gravity flow irrigation of
pastures and corn.
Mr Ott is protecting his wood
land from fire and over grazing He
has also planted 6.0W pine seedlings
during the past two seasons on
land that is not suited for pastures
and crops These .practices are in
keeping with his soil and wafer con
servation plan which the District-
helped him prepare on the farm a
little over a year ago

Vitamins
How many "vitamin pills"
per bottle?
Some vitamin preparations seem like bargains. Lots of
capsules per dollar. But that’s not the way medications
should be measured. The true measure is potency—how
much active, beneficial ingredient per dollar. When you
measure this way, you wfl] find that the real “barganH**
are in your registered pharmacy Before you buy vitamin
preparations from a non professional source, check with
your physician. It pays.
