Laurens, S. C.
the soil is dry enough. The earlier
planted better success may be had
due to moisture in the soil.
E. F. Coggins and his son. Brock,
of the Madden Station community,
have 18 or more acres planted to
Coastal Bermuda and think well of
it. They used the furrow method
of planting with outstanding suc
cess. It is a good idea to follow the
methods of doing things that have
been proven by the person making
a success.
Stolons should be planted as soon
as possible after being dug to pre
vent the roots from drying. Coastal
Bermuda should be planted on well
prepared land and fertilized with
at least 400 to 600 pounds of a 3-
12-12 fertilizer in the row per acre.
Rows laid off 36 inches apart with
an eight inch shovel to make a shal
low furrow. Fertilizer is then ap
plied in the furrow and mixed with
the soil. Fresh stolons are dropped
three feet apart in the furrow and
covered by driving the real wheel
of a tractor oh the edge of the
freshly opened furrow to press the
soil on the stolon. Coastal Bermuda
stolons can not be covered com
pletely like the native berrauda as
this will kill the plant.
Experiment stations as well as
successful farmers, obtain more
than twice the yield per acre from
Coastal Bermuda over the native
bermuda. Also bermuda grass will
carry when well fertilized and
limed 1.9 per cent more protein
than alfalfa.
If you have cattle, you need feed.
The cheapest feed is from grazing.
Coastal Bermuda can be used as
grazing, silage, and hay. Try it—
you will not regret planting Coastal
Bermuda.
