Sheriff's Deputies
Raid Stills And Club
Laurens county deputies busted
up three liquor stills and made a
raid on a club during the past few
days' according to records in the
'"sheriffs office.
Lasl Friday morning two deputies
joined with four men from New ber
ry to smash up a still near the
Laurens-New berry line at a point
i off the Joanna-Whitmire road. Dep
uties H R Jones and George Black-
well discovered the outfit was in
Newberry county and called in the
Newberry officers, who joined the
Laurens..men in destroying a 100-
gallon capacity- still, 900 gallons of
mash in metal vatsfand about 15
gallons of liquor. No one was at the
| still. New berry deputies included J
C. Neal. Slim Henderson, Tom Hen
derson, and Hugh Shannon
The Friday before. Deputies Bull
Spruill and W. D. Burns discovered
a liquor making outfit in the Milton
section about 10 miles south of Clin
ton off Highway 56. They destroy
ed a five-gallon barrel outfit and
about 200 gallons of mash. The op
erators were not at the scene.
Another still, about 100-gallon ca-1
pacity, was found in the Renno sec
tion Three Negroes were arrested
and charged with manufacturing
illegal liquor Lewis Cannon was
caught on the scene Two others
escaped but were caught latef.
They were Wjljie Anderson and
Charlie Simpson The three posted
$600 bonds each with Magistrate
Sam McCrary in Clinton.. _ ^
A rafid on'the Laurens Ameffcan
Legion Post Hut Saturday night of
last week, conducted by seven dep
uties, resulted in the confiscation of
35 half-pints of legal HqUOT and the
arrest of 14 men, each of whom
posted $10 bond, the sheriff said.
Five of the 14 were engaged in a
poker game and will be charged
with gambling, the sheriff said
